When Cervantes began writing the first chapter: "In a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind,…” it is clear that he writes a statement of intents. Our paper is a systematic search of the urban and architectural references with which Cervantes builds the stage of his romance. These "heritage footprints" are not limited to a simple enumeration, but they do help to understand the book in the very context in which they appear, without losing the vision of the whole. To establish a certain order, we have classified them into four groups: sales and housing; palaces, fortresses and castles; singular buildings, monuments and typical places; and, finally, the urban environments. With all these elements, that give shape to the architectural heritage of Don Quixote, the article approaches those "footprints". All of them, present at the time of its writing, are part of the geographical, natural and built space of the Spain as it once was.
