Women with Disabilities in Lebanon

Al-Raida Journal, 1970

Disability is a twofold problem for women round the world. This is particularly true for women with disabilities in a developing country like Lebanon, where cultural norms and social traditions keep them isolated and marginalized most of the time. However, women with disabilities in Lebanon have benefited – though in a limited manner – from programs for rehabilitation, the work of some institutions and the care of disabled people’s organizations.

Barriers perceived by women with disabilities in Gaza Palestine

This article presents the findings of an emancipatory disability research project in Gaza, Palestine. Among other topics, the project investigates the barriers faced by women with disabilities regarding the access to health services. The article shows that the participants face numerous barriers that are also common to persons with disabilities and more specifically to women with disabilities in other parts of the world. In addition, the authors highlight the specific political situation of Gaza strip, which creates additional barriers and challenges especially for women with disabilities – such as access to specialised health services and livelihood opportunities.

The current situation of persons with disabilities in Jordan

2018

This research report presents recent data on the state of persons with disabilities (PWD) in Jordan, including data on access to basic services; the political, social, cultural, and economic context for persons with disabilities; and laws and policies relevant to the rights of persons with disabilities. It also considers the situation for Syrian refugees with disabilities with regards to the above themes. The current official estimate of disability prevalence is 13 percent of the population, amounting to over 1,100,000 people. The 2004 census from Jordan reported a disability prevalence rate of 1.23 percent. In 2007 the prevalence rate was estimated to be 1.9 percent, with 41 percent of persons with disabilities being female. Prevalence figures for disability in the Arab region have historically been far lower than the global disability prevalence rate, which is estimated by the World Health Organization to be 15 percent.

Women with Disabilities in the State of Qatar: Human Rights, Challenges and Means of Empowerment

2017

This study explored human rights for Qatari women with disabilities, challenges and means of empowerment as perceived by females and males both with and without disabilities. The Questionnaire of the Rights of Women with Disabilities (QRWD) was developed using the Articles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Results indicated that participants without disabilities, especially men, less acknowledged the rights of women with disabilities. Furthermore, women with disabilities did not emphasize civil and political rights, but highly addressed the obstacles related to the society and legislative and political empowerment. Findings were discussed in the light of the previous literature and further recommendations were provided.

Disability under Siege - Lebanon Literature Review

This literature review is part of the project ‘Disability Under the Siege’, a programme bringing together a community of researchers, educational practitioners, cultural institutions, advocacy organisations and disability led groups in the UK and Middle East. The project aims to contribute to research efforts by providing intellectual and logistical resources that local practitioners need to transform education provision for children with disabilities in conflict-affected countries. The literature review which is focused on Lebanon, comes as a first step to map and understand the situation of persons with disabilities in general but more pertinent to this study, is the research carried out in this field. Thus, this review comprises the academic, medical, and grey literature regarding disability in Lebanon. It also includes key insights from meetings with disability community activists to shed light on what is done, and not done, for people with disabilities in Lebanon as well the mobilization efforts done for and by people with disabilities in Lebanon.

Women and girls with disabilities in conflict and crises

People with disabilities have been found to ‘form one of the most socially excluded groups in any displaced or conflict-affected community’ (Pearce et al, 2016: 119). They may have difficulty accessing humanitarian assistance programmes, due to a variety of societal, attitudinal, environmental and communication barriers, and are at greater risk of violence than their non-disabled peers (Pearce, 2014: 4). Women and girls with disabilities are ‘particularly vulnerable to discrimination, exploitation and violence, including gender-based violence (GBV), but they may have difficulty accessing support and services that could reduce their risk and vulnerability (Pearce, 2014: 4). This rapid review looks at the available evidence on the risks and vulnerabilities faces by women and girls with disabilities in conflict and crises and interventions to support them.
