This article examines the formation of the ‘polis of the Epidaurians’, in its three main dimensions (nucleated settlement, political community, and territory), integrating both archaeological and literary evidence. Emphasis is placed on the following aspects: a) the history of the site on Mount Kynortion from the MH period; b) the great importance of the sanctuary, which had developed since the LH period at the same place. It is postulated that the sanctuary contributed to the strengthening of relations between the inhabitants of its wider area and the city of Epidaurus, shaping their collective memory and identity. The evidence from the recent excavations at the sanctuary of Apollo Maleatas and Asklepios supports the association of the rapidly growing, vivid cult during the 7th century BC with the ‘polis of the Epidaurians’, already developed in all its three dimensions.
