A cross-cultural examination of the relationship between negative mood states, body image and eating disorders

Bulletin de la Société des sciences médicales du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, 2009

The present study investigated the relationship between depression and anxiety symptoms, body image and disordered eating behaviours in Polish and French populations. In addition, our study was also designed to explore durability and intensity of depression and anxiety symptoms in both anorexic groups. Participants were 95 adolescent girls suffering from anorexia nervosa and 95 healthy women. All participants completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and Eating Disorder Inventory. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the depression score of Polish anorexic patients was significantly higher than those of French adolescents. Compared with the control group without eating disorders, both anorexic group experienced significantly higher anxiety and depression symptoms. Anxiety and depression levels were found to have increased with the Polish women's age and Body Mass Index. They were independent of the illness duration for both in Polish and French patients suffe...

Association between attitudes towards body image, negative emotions about one’s own body and self-state representation in a clinical sample of eating disordered women

Archives of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

Aim. The purpose of the study was to assess the body image disturbance in patients with eating disorders. Methods. The clinical samples include 25 women with anorexia nervosa, 25 with bulimia nervosa and 30 normal weight women. All participants were assessed with the Body Attitude Test, the Body Dissatisfaction Scale and the Contour Drawing Rating Scale and their clinical and sociodemographic features were recorded. results. In patients with anorexia ideal self, that is one's representation of the attributes that someone would like the person to possess (the patient's perspective), is less pathological compared to the patients with bulimia. However, the ought self, that is, one's representation of the attributes that someone believes the person should possess (the perceived perspective of family and friends), is more pathological in group with anorexia nervosa. Conclusions. The correlations between the examined variables of body image, as well as the results of a structural analysis using PRInCALS, were interpreted at the light of the state-of-the-art in body image disturbance. Results are discussed on the background of social comparison literature. body image disturbance / self-discrepancy / anorexia nervosa / bulimia nervosa

A psychological typology of females diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder

Health Psychology Report, 2015

Background The present paper reports the results of research aimed at identifying intra-group differences among females suffering from different eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder) in terms of the subjects’ psychological traits, adoption of socio-cultural norms (through media pressure, internationalization of norms, and exposure to information concerning body image standards), and the level of body dissatisfaction. The following research question was asked: is it possible to distinguish specific profiles of psychological characteristics, as well as levels of body dissatisfaction, social pressure, media exposure and internalization of common standards of body image? Participants and procedure The clinical population consisted of 121 females aged 20-26. The research was conducted in the years 2007-2012. The following research methods and procedures were applied: 1) a clinical interview, 2) the Contour Drawing Rating Scale, 3) the Eating Disord...

BodyWise: Evaluating a Pilot Body Image Group for Patients with Anorexia Nervosa

European eating disorders review : the journal of the Eating Disorders Association, 2015

Body image disturbance can be enduring and distressing to individuals with eating disorders and effective treatments remain limited. This pilot study evaluated a group-based treatment-BodyWise-developed for use in full and partial hospitalization with patients with anorexia nervosa at low weight. A partial crossover waitlist design was used. BodyWise (N = 50) versus treatment as usual (N = 40) were compared on standardized measures of body image disturbance. Results demonstrated significant improvement in the group compared to treatment as usual for the primary outcome measure (Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire Shape Concern subscale) and other manifestations of body image disturbance including body checking and body image quality of life. BodyWise appeared acceptable to participants, and was easy to deliver within the pragmatics of a busy eating disorder service. There is potential for its wider dissemination as a precursor to more active body image interventions. Copyright...

The Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ-3): reliability and normative comparisons of eating disordered patients

Body Image, 2004

The Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire-3 (SATAQ-3) is a measure of one's endorsement of societal appearance ideals. The measure has received extensive evaluation in normative samples, but only minimal evaluation in clinical groups. In this study, 440 patients with eating disorders completed the SATAQ-3. Internal consistencies were excellent for the four SATAQ-3 subscales. Groups did not differ by diagnosis on the Information subscale, however, individuals with bulimia nervosa scored higher than individuals with both subtypes of anorexia nervosa (restricting and binge eating/purging) on levels of Internalization-General and Internalization-Athlete. The findings provide informative normative data, along with preliminary results indicative of the potentially greater role of media messages and images in the formation and/or maintenance of bulimia nervosa than anorexia nervosa.

Measuring body satisfaction in women with eating disorders and healthy women: appearance-related and functional components in the Body Cathexis Scale (Dutch version)

Eating and Weight Disorders - Studies on Anorexia, Bulimia and Obesity

Purpose Differentiating the concept of body satisfaction, especially the functional component, is important in clinical and research context. The aim of the present study is to contribute to further refinement of the concept by evaluating the psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the Body Cathexis Scale (BCS). Differences in body satisfaction between clinical and non-clinical respondents are also explored. Method Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to investigate whether functional body satisfaction can be distinguished as a separate factor, using data from 238 adult female patients from a clinical sample and 1060 women from two non-clinical samples in the Netherlands. Univariate tests were used to identify differences between non-clinical and clinical samples. Results EFA identified functionality as one of three factors, which was confirmed by CFA. CFA showed the best fit for a three-factor model, where functionality, non-wei...

Psychometric properties of the Attitudes Towards Body Figure Questionnaire in Mexican female students and patients with eating disorders

European Eating Disorders Review, 2006

The aim of this article was to determine the psychometric characteristics of the Attitudes Towards Body Figure Questionnaire in a sample of Mexican female students and to compare them with a sample of patients with eating disorders. A self-applicable questionnaire with 15 questions on the importance of one's weight, and figure was given to a sample of students with an average age of 18 years in Mexico City (N = 408) and a sample of patients under treatment (N = 87). The results showed adequate values of internal consistency and a factorial structure in two highly correlated factors that was corroborated in a confirmatory factorial analysis. The questionnaire yielded data with adequate concurrent and predictive validity as well as appropriate values of sensitivity and specificity. This questionnaire constitutes a significant contribution to the field of research on eating disorders and body image in adolescents in Mexico that is why its use is recommended for research and prevention work in the area.
