Kosakata adalah elemen penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa.Di kelas empat SD Negeri 1 Sukoharjo memiliki masalah serius dalam kosakata menguasai. Ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa tidak memperhatikan penjelasan guru. Jadi, pada 55% rata-rata siswa mendapatkan skor di bawah kriteria keberhasilan (65 0-100 skala). Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, peneliti menawarkan permainan sevo. Pendekatan penelitian kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Subyek adalah 18 siswa. Prosedur penelitian studi pendahuluan dan penelitian tindakan diimplementasikan dalam bentuk siklus. Instrumen penelitian terdiri dari panduan observasi dalam proses belajar, tes, kuesioner, dan catatan lapangan. Hasil dari mereka adalah sumber data penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 8 siswa (44%) lulus uji pada studi awal, 11 siswa (61%) lulus tes pada siklus pertama, dan pada siklus terakhir 17 siswa (94%) lulus ujian. Berdasarkan perbandingan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa sevo permainan dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa. Berdasarkan hasil ditemukan, penulis menyarankan kepada guru dan siswa untuk menggunakan permainan dalam pengajaran kosa kata sevo belajar. Kata kunci: meningkatkan, penguasaan kosakata, sevo game. ABSTRACT Vocabulary is a vital element in language learning.At the fourth grade of SD Negeri 1 Sukoharjo has serious problem in mastering vocabulary. It shows that the students do not pay attention to the teacher explanation. Thus, on the average 55 % of the students get score under the criteria of success (65 from 0 -100 scale). To solve this problem, the researcher offers sevo game. The research approaches are quantitative and qualitative. The design of this research is classroom action research. The subjects are 18 students. The research procedures are preliminary study and research action implemented in the form of cycles. Research instruments consist of observation guide in learning process, test, questionnaire, and field notes. The results of them are the data sources of the research. The result of the study shows 8 students (44%) passed the test on the preliminary study, 11 students (61%) passed the test on the first cycle, and on the last cycle 17 students (94%) passed the test. Based on the comparison, it is concluded that sevo game can be used to improve the students' vocabulary mastery. Based on the result found, the writer suggests to the teacher and the students to use sevo game in teaching learning vocabulary.
1. Introduction Language plays an essential role in making people communicate with each other. And as for English, it is considered one of the most important languages all over the world. It helps communicating with foreigners at home and abroad. Accordingly, The English language is widely used in science, technology, computer services, politics, commerce and internet. Hence, many countries emphasize the importance of teaching English to their citizens. Richards (2001: 1) believes that “Second and foreign language teaching is one of the world’s largest educational enterprises and millions of children and adults worldwide devote large amounts of time and efforts to the task of mastering a new language”. The English language has a special place in the world today. It has become an international language, both in the sense that it is now the native language of people from several continents and in the sense that many others have learnt to speak it as a second language (Graddol, Cheshire& Swann,1987:3). Ardeo (2003:110) states that during the last few decades there has been an increasing need to use the English language for the expression of knowledge within specific professional fields. In order to achieve a successful process of learning English, one must acquire its vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and the four skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Accurate and adequate vocabulary influences language comprehension more than grammatical correctness in effective communication. In this concern, Wilkins (1972:111) emphasizes that “Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”. This clarifies the importance and the essential role of vocabulary in learning a foreign language. Vocabulary is a vital part of language that students need to master in order to communicate effectively. Moreover, it is considered the base for the other skills. The ability to grasp Humanities and Social Sciences 2013; 1(1): 46-57 47 the meaning of new words is a necessary skill to strengthen reading and listening comprehension. This can positively impact overall academic success and can develop skills for real world applications. This calls for more attention to this important skill. The researchers have observed that students face serious problems regarding this aspect of language. Students tend throughout learning stages to favor interesting methods which make interacting, exciting andfun learning. This motivated the researcher to conduct this study which aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using puzzles on developing tenth graders vocabulary achievement. It also examined the long-term effect of the puzzles on the retention of the vocabulary.

Vocabulary is the most important component of the overall communicative competence that enables students to convey information, ideas or notions to others in such written and oral form. Vocabulary mastery is the ability to use the words in conducting the communication and understanding the meaning of the words or phrases in English. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. This research was applied into two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. In the second meeting of cycle II, the researcher obtained the improvement of students, who achieved the Minimum Competence Criterion (70). There were 14 (53%) students who got score among 85-100 classified as “Very Good Criteria”, 12 (42%) students got score among 75-84 classified as “Good Criteria”. 1 Investigating Elementary School Pupils ’ Proficiency in Mastering English Vocabulary

English has been taught at elementary schools as one of the local content subjects. It is necessary to study English from an early age in order to achieve good mastery in it. To master English means to master the four skills in it and also the language aspects, including vocabulary. As one of the language aspects, vocabulary plays an important role in language learning. This study reports on pupils ’ proficiency in mastering English vocabulary after three years of studying in elementary school. The writer chose 55 grade-four pupils of SD Methodist Banda Aceh as a sample for this study. They were given a vocabulary test related to reading and writing skills consisting of 26 items. The test was to be done in 20 minutes. After calculating the data, it was found that the mean score ( ) of the pupils was 69.5, with the highest score at 92.3 and the lowest score at 26.9. Improving Students’ Vocabulary Through Words Games at Grade VI of SDS Setia Padang

The problem of this research is based on the phenomena of students at VI class of SDS Setia Padang. Based on the observation, the students' still have lack of vocabulary. There are various teaching methods have been offered by the experts, one of them is through of word games. Word games mostly used as it can motivate your learners English. Therefore, this paper explore how word games can be used to improve students' vocabulary mastery at elementary school level. This study applied classroom action research by using two cycles to find how word games increase the vocabulary mastery of the English language learner at elementary school. The results of pre-cycle show that the score of leaners' vocabulary mastery is 59 before the treatment. After implementing word game in teaching, the score of the students' is increased into 68.6. Then, the score in average is increased into 81.7 in the second cycle. Based on these data, the average scores of students are getting improved after they were taught by using word games. Based on the scores obtained, it indicates that the achievement of the students' vocabulary mastery is getting better. It can be concluded that word games can be used to improve the vocabulary mastery. Moreover, word games is also able to attract students' interest and motivation. Thus, by using Word Games as a medium for learning English for sixth grade can also foster confidence.
Vocabulary mastery is the basic language skill. Vocabulary mastery is the key for students to understand what they hear and read, and to communicate successfully with other people. There are two kinds of mastery in vocabulary, passive-receptive and active productive mastery. This research tried to investigate how the passive-receptive vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs. Darul Istiqamah Putera Barabai in the Academic Year of 2015-2016 is. The subject of the research is the eighth grade students. The instrument used in this research in collecting the data was the vocabulary test. The research result shows that the highest passive-receptive vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs. Darul Istiqamah Putera Barabai in the Academic Year of 2015-2016 was in synonym, antonym, and choosing the appropriate vocabulary. The definition mastery only shows good category. In general, the students' passive-receptive mastery was categorized into excellent category, compared with the average score of the first test which was 89.9 and 91.1 of the second test. Based on the research result, it is suggested that in teaching vocabulary, the teacher should provide definition and give the example directly. It is better if the teacher shows the example contextually. Students should learn and add more new vocabularies. It can help the students in mastering the skills in English and help them also in doing the national examination in the English subject. Although in the English syllabus vocabulary was not taught directly but integratedly, there should be a focus on vocabulary during the teaching and learning sessions of the four language skills required.
THE APPLICATION OF BOARD RACE GAME TO ASSESS THE STUDENT'S VOCABULARY MASTERY AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This article was created to present a concept in applying, understanding, remembering, pronouncing and mastering vocabulary in English. The objective of this paper was how to assess the student's vocabulary mastery by applying board race game as a media to the students at elementary school. Students will be more motivated to do an activity if they are having fun doing it. Because this game is not only liven-up the class, but also provide the applying, understanding, remembering, pronouncing and mastering vocabulary. Thus, it could improve the student's motivation in improving their ability in speaking English.
