Developing strategic innovation in large corporations—The dynamic capability view of the firm

Strategic innovation dynamically brings about strategic positioning through new products, services, and business models and is a dynamic view of strategy that enables a large corporation to maintain its competitiveness and establish sustainable growth. For these reasons, large corporations have to be innovators that can reinforce their existing positions (businesses) through incremental innovation, while at the same time, constantly renew or destroy existing business through radical innovation. From detailed reviews of existing dynamic capabilities theories and further theories deeply related to the characteristics of corporate or organizational capabilities, this article presents a theoretical model of a strategic innovation system as a corporate system capability to enable a large company to achieve strategic innovation. Furthermore, through in‐depth longitudinal case studies , the article also discusses the importance of strategic innovation capabilities to achieve a dynamic spiral of the 2 completely different ordinary and dynamic capabilities on the capabilities map, skillfully use and combine to achieve swift or slow incremental innovation as exploitation, or radical innovation as exploration.

Dynamic Capabilities for the Development of Innovation Capability

2019

The present article aims at analyzing the dynamic capabilities’ contributions for the development of innovation capability in a chemical sector company. The company headquarters are located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with branches in other states in Brazil, Latin America and China. More specifically, it concerns the company’s innovation strategies and practices related to sensing, seizing and reconfiguration capabilities and their micro-foundations, as presented by Teece (2007). This research is classified as a descriptive and qualitative case study. Data were collected through 10 semi-structured interviews and analyzed through the qualitative content analysis. The main results show that the dynamic capabilities help to develop innovation capability. This research checked that the approach on dynamic capabilities is of fundamental importance for the development of innovation capability by reinforcing it as an organizational strategy.

THEORETICAL UNDERPINNINGS OF DYNAMIC CAPABILITIES

his article is a review of literature about the theoretical underpinnings of dynamic capabilities. It discusses the theoretical underpinnings of dynamic capabilities. It starts with a conceptualization of dynamic capabilities, the role of dynamic capabilities, and their impact on organizations. The article explores diverse concepts by which dynamic capabilities have been the theoretical foundations of dynamic capabilities. It traces the origins of dynamic capabilities to the concepts of creative destruction, architectural innovation, configuration, competence, combinative capabilities, distinctive competence, core competence, organizational behaviour and organizational routines. It finds that dynamic capabilities are an extension of the Resource Based View. The paper identifies some conceptual gaps emanating from lack of clear definition. It concludes that a multi theory study and uncover a single conceptual definition. The article contributes to the understanding of dynamic capabilities as a new paradigm in strategic management.

Dynamic capabilities: What they need to be dynamic?

2006

Strategic management theory developed dynamic capabilities concept aiming to explain how organizations can achieve and sustain the competitive advantage in the continuously changing environment. We suggest that this concept, though being extremely powerful, still needs elaboration along two important questions: what are the origins of the dynamism of these capabilities and what managers can do in practice if they want to develop them. In this paper we aim to address these issues. Bridging strategic management and change management, we introduce a concept of «organizational change capability» as a constituent of any dynamic capability. Further on we discuss key elements of change capability, propose a number of managerial tools that can contribute to its development and illustrate our arguments with a case study.

A dynamic innovation model for managing capabilities of continuous innovation

International Journal of Technology Management, 2010

The primary objective of this study is to investigate the required capabilities for continuous innovation through analysis of the existing literature and examination of empirical cases. A dynamic innovation model (DIM) is proposed to accelerate enterprise capabilities in building continuous innovation in a dynamic business environment. The DIM combines the concept of entrepreneurship and resource management and highlights the importance of co-evolving relationships among these capabilities. Findings of a comparative analysis of the DIM for two PC manufacturers, Atech and Bymove, illustrate how business leaders combined foresight and insight with cyclical processes of resource integration, learning and transformation in delivering continuous innovation. We argue that the foresight of business leaders must be accompanied by insights about the development of the required capability for innovation, whereas the cycle of the building of dynamic capabilities must be linked with the business foresight for effective innovation.

Dynamic Capabilities:A Catalyst to Increase Performance and Gain Competitive Advantage

Sustaining a competitive advantage has been crux of success in the rapidly changing volatile business market. As leaders seek to shift to performance based systems, it is essential to be flexible to meet new and consistent demand. Research suggests that the dynamic capability strategy creates a venue open to continuous improvement and innovation. Therefore, by fostering dynamic capabilities, organizations can be flexible to openly innovate and to maintain high level of performance and sustain competitive advantage.

Influence Of A Company'S Dynamic Capabilities On Its Innovation Capabilities

2016

The advanced concepts of strategic and innovation management in the sphere of company dynamic and innovation capabilities, and achieving their mutual alignment and a synergy effect, are important elements in business today. This paper analyses the theory and empirically investigates the influence of a company's dynamic capabilities on its innovation capabilities. A new multidimensional model of dynamic capabilities is presented, consisting of five factors appropriate to real time requirements, while innovation capabilities are considered pursuant to the official OECD and Eurostat standards. After examination of dynamic and innovation capabilities indicated their theoretical links, the empirical study testing the model and examining the influence of a company's dynamic capabilities on its innovation capabilities showed significant results. In the study, a research model was posed to relate company dynamic and innovation capabilities. One side of the model features the variabl...
