Users’ Perceptions of E-books at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi : A Case Study

The collection development policies of university libraries are driven by the information seeking behaviour and extent of use of resources by students, researchers and teachers. Libraries have introduced e-books in their collections with rising demand of users for them. However, e-books have not gained the perceived acceptance among users. It is essential to understand the gaps in preferences and experiences of users of e-books in academic libraries so that the collections of e-books can be customised to meet the users’ preferences. The purpose of this study is to understand how students, teachers and research scholars access, browse and use e-books in Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, India. The study has identified factors that encourage or discourage the use of e-books in academic libraries. It highlights preferences for the format (electronic/print) while perusing books as textbooks or reference books for research.
Present status of using e-book in selected university libraries of Bangladesh
This study presents the scenario of the selected private and public university library e-book performance through UGC digital library in Bangladesh. Moreover, this study tries to calculate the university's library performance through quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods where used eight university's library data and their respective students and professional respondents. This study finds that most of the university's library to join a member of UGC digital library and also smoothly runs the e-book services and others online reading services. However, this study further finds that in university's library sector runs their operation by unskilled human resources for operating ILS software and IT activities. Due to less skilled human resources, many students and users could not get proper services. As a result, many e-book users have faced the critical problem in conducting their operation such as reading books, journals, and newspapers. Finally, this study assists the decision makers to take more attention to the significant e-book library activities that may help in increasing the efficiency positions and skilled manpower's and also ensuring favorable quality education and e-book user's productivity. Moreover, this study will assist the management of the university's library in Bangladesh in setting up plans and technological strategies in future.
A Survey of e-Book Awareness and Usage amongst Students in an Academic Library
This paper reports on an online survey of e-book awareness and usage level in a British academic library. The main objectives of this survey were to: (a) assess students' awareness of the availability of e-books in their academic library; (b) measure the level of e-book usage among the students; and (c) identify the reasons why students do or don't use e-books. A self-selected sampling method was employed to generate a sample of students consisting of undergraduate and postgraduate instructional students registered with the University of Strathclyde for academic year 2005/6. An announcement email was posted to the student web portal for a period of three weeks inviting them to participate in the survey. A total of 1372 of responses were returned representing just under 10% response rate. In general, this survey found that e-book awareness was low as was the level of e-book usage amongst the students: 57% of students were not aware of the availability of e-books from the library and 60% of them had not used an e-book. Non-users commented that e-books were not widely advertised or promoted which has most probably contributed to this lack of awareness and non usage. Despite the low levels of e-book awareness and usage, non e-book users indicated their desire to learn more about e-books.
Student's Perception of E-Books in Nigeria Universities Library
This paper aims to study the student's perception of e-books in Universities library in Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was adopted for this study and the instrument for data collection was the questionnaire, which was designed to obtain information from students in the universities library in SouthWest zone of Nigeria. The purposive sampling technique was adopted in selecting 12 universities library which met the criteria for the study being fully computerized with functional internet access. The author found that students are aware of what e-books are, and the major mode of reading them is on the screen, while the main purpose of using e-book is to find material and facilitate research. The paper intends to explore the awareness, usage, access patterns, and problems related to electronic resources (e-resources) among the users of Sayaji Rao Gaekwad Library. It also provides the best possible suggestions to improve the awareness and usage of these e-resources. To fulfil the objectives of the study, a survey is conducted among the users through a structured questionnaire, followed by a personal discussion with users and the librarian. The quantitative and qualitative methods were applied to analyse the collected data, and a conclusion was drawn along with a few useful recommendations and suggestions. The study reveals that the library has a good collection of print and e-resources. 80% of library users are aware of the e-resources. Nearly 80% of users are comfortable accessing e-resources. The majority 60.57% of users have no problem with access to e-resources. Most of the users access the e-resources for academic and research purposes. The study is confined to the library users of Sayaji Rao Gaekwad Library (Central Library) of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The study is unique in its way. A lot of research has been done on the usage, awareness, and patterns of access to electronic resources at various libraries. But very less user studies have been done using library collection data on the e-resources of the library under study. E-book Culture at Rajshahi University Students in Bangladesh

In the era of Information and Communication Technology, E-books are the blessing for the present world and it has drawn worldwide popularity besides the printed books among the readers. This paper aims at identifying the usage of Ebooks among the science and engineering faculty students at Rajshahi University, Bangladesh. A total of 150 respondents were chosen randomly and distributed with a structured questionnaire where 141 respondents returned the questionnaire. Simple percentage calculations were used to analyze data. The study finds that 100% of the surveyed students used E-books. Most of students used E-books by Laptop and Smartphone by borrowing from friends and accessing central library databases for improving and gaining knowledge of research and course work in the department. However, most of the students mentioned that they prefer printed books to E-books. Majority of the students agreed that the library should enrich the collections of Ebooks as well as the users and library professionals should be properly trained up Rajshahi University.
E-book acquisition features: attitude of Iranian information professionals

Purpose -This paper aims to consider the most important criteria of e-book acquisition in academic libraries. The survey seeks these reasons on the basis of two aspects: e-book features for users and for information professionals or libraries. Moreover, restrictions on e-books acquisition are surveyed with regard to information professionals' attitude. Design/methodology/approach -The survey research method is used in this study with questionnaire and interview used for data gathering. The statistical population consisted of 60 information professionals working at state universities of metropolitan Tehran. Findings -The results show that high storage capacity and multimedia capability are the most important features in acquiring e-books on the basis of academic user needs. Also, the main criteria of acquiring e-books from the professionals' point of view of fostering their interests are: occupying little space, ease of selection and simultaneous circulation. Moreover, this study shows that the main restrictions of e-book acquisition are: hardware and software restrictions, the lack of a union catalog for Iranian e-books, low level of user familiarity, hackers and even eye-fatigue when reading. Originality/value -This study takes the form of unique research that surveys the e-book acquisition criteria in Iran on the basis of two aspects (user and library) with focus on information professionals' attitude, simultaneously. In addition, there has not been any research on e-books in Iran, and this study is the first.
Kuwait University Students’ Awareness, Usage, Perceptions, and Satisfaction Pertaining to e-Books

This study aims to analyze Kuwait University (KU) students’ awareness, use, attitudes, and satisfaction pertaining to e-books. Students’ views and perceptions were measured using an online survey questionnaire that was distributed in KU’s colleges during the spring semester of the 2017-2018 academic year. The research design that was newly proposed by this study—information and communication technology acceptance model (ICTAM)— revealed several interesting results such as the following: (1) almost three-fourths of the students were aware of e-books and their uses in education; however, only approximately one-fourth were aware of KU’s e-books service; (2) more than one-third of students believed that e-books are broadly adopted into education whether as an alternative/companion medium to printed textbooks/books or supplementary materials for the classroom, and more than three-fourths of them had used e-books earlier; yet, only approximately one-quarter had previously used KU’s e-books service; (3) almost three-fourths of students from among those who had used e-books earlier and one-third of students from among those who had not used e-books ever perceived its ease of use; (4) approximately three-fourths of students from among those who had experienced using e-books previously and almost one-half of students among those who had not used e-books at all perceived its usefulness and effectiveness for education; (5) more than one-half of students from among those who had used e-books earlier, and more than one-third of students from among those who had not used e-books ever perceived its importance/significance for education and work; (6) almost two-thirds of students from among those who had used e-books before reported being satisfied with their experience of using e-books; and (7) more than two-thirds of students from among those who have already used e-books have confirmed that they will continue to use e-books in the future, and almost one-half of students from among those who have not used e-books of any kind reported their intention and motivation to use e-books in the future.

This study examined the perception and usage pattern of e-book among LIS undergraduate students from selected five universities. Questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. Five research questions were developed and answered. The findings demonstrate that LIS undergraduate students still use e-books more compare to print books. The results also reveal that LIS undergraduate students have positive perception of e-book as it enhance learning effectiveness, assist to finish course content/outline; makes reading faster; easy to use and with clear graphical illustrations. The usage pattern of e-books among LIS undergraduate students is majorly for research purpose and the majority is highly satisfied with reading e-books. Users' Perception About E-books in India

This paper aims to study the users' understanding and acceptance of e-books in India. This study was carried out by conducting a survey using questionnaire as a tool to find out users' views on using e-books as compared to printed documents. This study was carried out during the period of January to March 2006 covering a wide range of ages, subject backgrounds, computer experience, occupations, and comfort in using computers in their daily life. The readers survey found that Indians are generally willing to use and read e-books though they continue to prefer and use printed publications. Generally, the users are aware of the advantages and limitations of each medium and will tailor their choice according to their needs. Of the total, slightly less than half of the users (41 %) are ready to pay the same or slightly lesser price as compared to printed publications, 24 per cent are half or quarter the price of printed publications.
