Automatically extracting Translation Links using a wide coverage semantic taxonomy

TGE (Tlink Generator Environment) is a system for semi-automatically extracting translation links. The system was developed within the ACQUILEX II 2 project as a tool for supporting the construction of a multi-lingual lexical knowledge base containing detailed syntactic and semantic information from MRD resources. A drawback of the original system was the need of human intervention for selecting the more appropriate translation links in the case where more than one were extracted and proposed by the system. This paper deals with the task of overcoming this drawback. What is presented is an heuristic method based on conceptual distance that uses information from an external wide-coverage semantic taxonomy (WordNet). Our aim is to overcome the problem in an automatic way or to provide the user with complementary information in order to make his/her choice easier.

This paper describes work on incorporating Princenton’s WordNet morphosemantics links to the fabric of the Portuguese OpenWordNet-PT. Morphosemantic links are relations between verbs and derivationally related nouns that are semantically typed (such as for tune-tuner ― in Portuguese “afinar-afinador” – linked through an “agent” link). Morphosemantic links have been discussed for Princeton’s WordNet for a while, but have not been added to the official database. These links are very useful, they help us to improve our Portuguese WordNet. Thus we discuss the integration of these links in our base and the issues we encountered with the integration.
The automatic creation of lexical entries for a multilingual MT system

In this paper, we describe a method of extracting information from an on-line resource for the consmaction of lexical entries for a multilingual , interlingual MT system (ULTRA). We have been able to automatically generate lexical entries for interlingual concepts corresponding to nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Although several features of these entries continue to be supplied manually we have greatly decreased the time required to generate each entry and see this as a promising method for the creation of largescale lexicons.

Spanish EuroWordNet and LCS-Based Interlingual MT

We present a machine translation framework in which the interlingua| Lexical Conceptual Structure (LCS)|is coupled with a de nitional component that includes bilingual (EuroWordNet) links between words in the source and target languages. While the links between individual words are language-speci c, the LCS is designed to be a language-independent, compositional representation. We take the view that the two types of information|shallower, transfer-like knowledge as well as deeper, compositional knowledge|can be reconciled in interlingual machine translation, the former for overcoming the intractability of LCS-based lexical selection, and the latter for relating the underlying semantics of two words cross-linguistically. We describe the acquisition process for these two information types and present results of hand-veri cation of the acquired lexicon. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of the two information types in interlingual MT.
ARIES: A lexical platform for engineering Spanish processing tools

We present a lexical platform that has been developed for the Spanish language. It achieves portability between different computer systems and efficiency, in terms of lexical coverage. A model for the full treatment of Spanish inflectional morphology for verbs, nouns and adjectives is presented. This model permits word formation based solely on morpheme concatenation, driven by a feature-based unification grammar. The run-time lexicon is a collection of allomorphs for both stems and endings. Although not tested, it should be suitable also for other highly inflected languages, such as Roman ones. A formalism is also described for encoding a lemma-based lexical source, well suited for expressing linguistic generalizations: inheritance classes, lemma encoding, morpho-graphemic allomorphy rules and limited type-checking. From this source base, we can automatically generate an allomorph indexed dictionary adequate for efficient retrieval and processing. A set of software tools has been implemented around this formalism: lexical base augmenting aids, lexical compilers to build run-time dictionaries and access libraries for them, feature manipulation libraries, unification and pseudo-unification modules, morphological processors, a parsing system, etc. Software interfaces among the different modules and tools are cleanly defined to ease software integration and tool combination in a flexible way. Directions for accessing our e-mail and web demonstration prototypes are also provided.
