Instead of following grand theories and methods prescribed during pre-service and in-service teacher education programs, experienced teachers follows their own theories of practice. However, due to the dominance of hypothetico-deductive mode of inquiry in language teaching, theories of practice have rarely been explored. To uncover personal theories implicit in teachers’ practice and how these theories are realized in down-to-earth techniques, this data-driven study aims at exploring fifteen experienced teachers’ techniques of teaching oral skills in junior high schools of Shahrood, a major city in Semnan province. To this end, teachers’ perspectives were qualitatively explored and analysed through the principles and procedures of grounded theory. Final analysis revealed that the participants used “Learners’ Mother Tongue”, "Warm-up", and "Role-play", "Summarizing”, “Storytelling", " Describing Pictures" and "Practicing Linguistic Pattern...
Speaking skills and teaching strategies: the case of an EFL classroom
2013
English occupies a place of prestige in the whole world simply because it is the lingua franca. In Saudi Arabia, though it can never replace Arabic yet becoming popular in younger generation for educational/economic growth and development. The way English has been taught in most of Asia including the gulf region, is to a great extent responsible for the deterioration of the standard of English for various reasons. The issue of falling standards of English in KSA in particular in the past is very much due to the curricular aims and objectives of English language Education. The main cause for the students learning difficulties and poor achievement especially in speaking skill is that teachers themselves have a very limited exposure of reasons of difficulties and appropriate instructional strategies. © 2015 Elixir All rights reserved. Al-Lisan

Subjects of this study are two English teachers and Students at Pesantren al-Falah. This study also investigates the way of English teaching methods or strategies in the classroom. There are two main instruments to collect data, those are Observation and interview guidelines. The result of the study indicates that the most teaching methods used are still a teacher-centered, direct method and habituation. This is due to the influence of the traditional Arabic learning model which is still largely focused on what is conveyed by the teacher in the classroom. But this Pesantren also implemented a communicative approach to develop the speaking skill of the students. One of the challenges faced is students' negative perceptions of English which assume that English is a w...

Promoting English Speaking Skills: Lessons Learnt from the Efl Classrooms Context
2020
As they are candidate of school English teachers in Indonesian schools, graduates of English education programs in Indonesia are expected to demonstrate adequate understanding of English pedagogical knowledge and uses. Yet, it is widely acknowledged that during their language and teaching training, many of these teacher candidates often experience various challenges, particularly in the domain of English-speaking skills. This paper, therefore, sought to explore how teacher educators (TEs) attempted to deal with such challenges in their teaching praxis. Drawing on a qualitative research approach, data were collected from TEs working in a university in the north part of Indonesia who were selected purposively, and classroom observation field-notes. Findings revealed two major themes, designing classroom tasks and promoting group work, which highlights the need to create a fun and stimulating classroom atmosphere for the TEs to foster improvement in English speaking skills. The Communicative Approach to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is currently the most popular approach in Southeast Asian countries. Its use by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers has been recommended by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Indonesia for the past decade, in all secondary schools throughout the country. This study attempts to gain deeper insights into the theoretical and practical relevance of the Communicative Approach to Indonesian EFL teachers, by obtaining data on how well teachers understand the underlying approach, and to what extent these teachers implement this understanding in their classroom practices. The study is based on the assumption that teachers' understanding of the theoretical knowledge of the underlying approach will be reflected in their classroom teaching. The study is mainly descriptive in nature. Four instruments were used to obtain data on EFL teachers' awareness of the Communicative Approach. A checklist was used to measure 30 EFL teacherest theoretical knowledge of the Communicative Approach. A questionnaire was used to demonstrate the same 30 teachers' reflections of the approach in their classroom practices. A classroom observation was conducted to directly observe 20 EFL teachers' performance with the Communicative Approach. An interview was held with the same 20 teachers to measure the extent to which they understand principles of theory and practice in the Communicative-Approach. Overall, results indicate t h a t Indonesian EFL teachers' theoretical and practical knowledge of the Communicative Approach was low. This was as expected. Specifically, their theoretical knowledge of this approach is severely limited in terms of the principles, terminology, and the underlying meanings of the terminology. Most teachers have difficulties comprehending the concepts, and do not extract the true meaning of each concept. In addition, practice is inconsistent with theory. What EFL teachers believe and value, in terms of the setting, the learner, and the target language, does appear to have a direct influence on their teaching practices. From the study, it is readily apparent that elements of the Communicative Approach may be employed in all Junior Secondary Schools. However, EFL teachers are not adequately equipped with knowledge concerning the effective or meaningful integration of the underlying approach, and its relevance to classroom practices. The main focus of this article is to evaluate the practices involving various approaches and methods that the novice Saudi English Teachers (SETs) employ in classrooms, and to see how far these are successful in attaining the desired results. It also takes into cognizance the chasm between the measures taken by Saudi Ministry of Education to modify the curriculum to develop communicative competence and the actualization these measures in the classroom pedagogy. The dichotomy eventually brings to bear upon the learning outcomes of the students who fail to achieve the required proficiency in communicative skills. The study necessitated a qualitative approach (grounded theory) in which previous literature was ransacked. Data was gathered through structured interviews, surveys and documents analysis. The rudimentary results showed that SETs rely more on conventional teaching methods despite the States thrust on Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) that tends to be more student-cente...
Investigating Iranian EFL Teachers’ Cognitions of Language Teaching Techniques.pdf
Teachers’ cognition constitutes the lion's share of research in recent years with the aim to understand the complexities underpinning the teachers’ cognitions. Such efforts have provided insights into how teachers’ cognitions develop over time and how they are reflected in their classroom practices. Although numerous studies have been conducted on the issue of Iranian EFL teachers’ cognitions about grammar and reading comprehension, little research study ever exists on their cognitions about the pronunciation techniques they apply in their EFL classrooms. Therefore, the present study was aimed to explore Iranian EFL teachers’ cognition, especially in relation to the pronunciation techniques they use in the oral communication classrooms and their cognitions about their language learners’ characteristics. For these purposes, the cognitions of five English teachers in the oral communication classrooms were investigated. The teachers were asked to answer two semi-structured interviews. Moreover, their students were required to fill out a questionnaire. The findings revealed that there was an intricate relationship between language teachers’ experience and their cognitions about the techniques they applied in classrooms.

It also tried to find out the teacher’s reasons why she used those strategies in teaching speaking class. A descriptively qualitative study was undertaken by observing the teaching and learning process in the classroom and interviewing the teacher in order to attain the needed data in this study. The results of the study showed that there were some strategies in communicative approach that the teacher used in teaching speaking class namely role-plays,discussion, storytelling, games. Meanwhile, to make the students speak up in the classroom was the main reason why the teacher more often used those strategies in speaking class. In conclusion, the strategies that have been used by the teacher could help the students speak up and be more active in learning English in the classroom, because all of the students were involved in the speaking activities.
