Communicative Language Teaching and Its Implication on English as a Second Language

English in Nigeria is taught and learnt as a second language and the aim of teaching and learning English is for communicative competence. Thus, this paper examines the communicative language approach to English teaching and learning, for it is an approach that aims to make communicative competence the goal of language learning. More so, the paper identified principles and classroom implication of using communicative language learning. Constraints to its implication amongst which are the nature of our examination, large classes, level of teachers' comprehension of the method were clearly discussed. The immerse importance of English language in Nigeria educational process is widely recognized by all and so it among the recommendations that teachers' proper pedagogical training, large classes and nature of our examination in secondary schools need urgent attention. In order to ensure the ultimate achievement of our educational goal.

Abstract The teaching and learning of English have experienced many ups and downs. Each approach reveals some positive and negative aspects. However, it is undeniable that the understanding of the nature of language determines the teaching approach. As time goes, the grammar-translation which used to dominate all the teaching practice reveals some drawbacks. As a reasult of the teaching method, learners are unable to use what they learnt for communication but description. This paper attempts to restate principles of the commonly used approach worldwide which put language in the right position of what it is "communication". By reviewing some key features of communicative competence which is the fundamental of the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), we hope that will benefit practioners who are sparing no efforts to make the teaching and learning of English more efficient. KEY WORDS: coomunicative competence, communicative language teaching.

Learning a language needs to advocate any kinds of language teaching areas which focuse on how language is developed. Communication is a key of human existence. In the current global scenario the need and role of communication has grown manifold. This has a great impact on the teaching and learning of language skills around the globe. Needless to say that English language is most widely used for official communications globally. But the irony here is that, for most of the people who speak English, it is not their native language. English serves as their second or third language. David (2004) writes, by 2003, the non-native speakers of English outnumbered the native speakers by the ratio 3:1. The learning of a language as a second language (L2) varies a lot from the acquisition of first language (L1). Hence, it is necessary to formulate a teaching method that suits the requirements of the L2 learners of the language. Several learning theories and teaching methods have been developed to enhance the language teaching and learning output. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is the most recent teaching method that is claimed to be the best method to teach English (any language for that matter) to improve the communicative competence of the learners. This paper presents a detailed discussion of the implications of CLT for the development of communication skills of the learners who learn English as a second language.

The term communicative competence captures the notion that the ability to use language in interaction requires not just control of linguistic form but also awareness of rules of use in different contexts (Hymes 1972). Communicative competence is a slippery term: different actors in second language (L2) research, education, and assessment interpret the term in a variety of ways and use it for a range of purposes, perhaps particularly in the field of languages for specific purposes (LSP). This is unfortunate because it is a key concept in LSP, as in applied linguistics more generally. Communicative competence can be considered to be the target of second language acquisition, a main goal of second or foreign language teaching and learning, or the object language testers seek to measure via performance tests. On Teaching Communicative Competence in ESL

The competence level of most learners of English as a second language has continued to decline in spite of the adoption of the Communicative Competence model in the teaching of English to those learners in Nigeria and other parts of the world. This paper reviews the inadequacies of the Grammatical Competence and the Communicative Competence models which render them inadequate for the teaching of English as a second language in non-EMT situations. It argues that grammatical competence is as desirable a goal of English language learning as communicative ability and recommends Communicative Grammar as a compromise that combines the virtues of the two earlier models while avoiding their shortcomings.

Article History The article discusses issues concerning the development of future English teachers' communicative competence. It considers the idea that developing communicative competence benefits not only the learner's interactive abilities from an educational standpoint, but also the learner's psycho-emotional characteristics and sociocultural development as a person. As previously stated, communicative competence refers to the ability to interact effectively with others, and competence is defined as a collection of language skills an individual possesses in order to learn a foreign language. This potential contributes to his/her ability to perform at a high level. This paper discusses the theory of communicative competence and several of its models; the significance of developing communicative competence in future English teachers; and the implications of communicative competence in English language teaching and learning. Additionally, the work suggests fundamental methodological principles for developing future English teachers' communicative competence.
Forming and developing students’ communicative competence: from reading to speaking

The article highlights the problem of students' foreign language communicative competence formation in the process of reading and speaking skills development. The authors point out that through reading activities students acquire language knowledge and develop speaking skills in both fluency and accuracy. Thus, the goal of the research is to define the effective ways of students' foreign language communicative competence formation by means of reading and speaking activities within the university English course. The article focuses on the concept of communicative competence and the ways to form it. The authors view this concept as a term referring not only to the language structural features, but also to its contextual, pragmatic and social characteristics. Reading and speaking skills are defined as central aspects for language communicative competence development. The authors consider basic teaching techniques and principles to involve students into foreign language communication. Reading and speaking activities are considered to be a powerful and effective resource to improve students' communicative skills.
