The aim of this study was to establish the haematological profile of Juvenile African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). In this study, erythrocyte characteristic of pure and reciprocal crosses of African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) and Asian catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (Sauvage, 1878) were evaluated. Blood smear was made from the progenies of C. gariepinus (CG), P. hypophthalmus (PH), Pangapinus (♀PH × ♂CG) and in two morphotypes (Clarias-like and Panga-like) of Clariothalmus (♀CG × ♂PH) obtained from similar breeding history. Erythrocyte measurement of the cell and nuclear axis was done under the microscope, while many other parameters were calculated. Result obtained suggests a preponderant maternal influence on the erythrocytes shape and size characteristics of the reciprocal crosses. Erythrocytes from progenies with C. gariepinus maternal origin was rounded in shape (not less than 90%) while those with P. hypophthalmus maternal origin had relatively high oval shaped erythrocytes (between 76 and 64%). Also, significant size variations were recorded for the different group. Principal component analysis and biplot of component loading of the trio comparison of hybrid progenies and the pure crosses suggest the possibility of discriminating the direction of hybridization of the reciprocal crosses. However, it was impossible to describe the hybridization status of the progenies assessed in this study. This approach may be a simple and viable alternative to molecular markers which characterizes maternal inheritance in hybrid crosses provided that there is significant shape difference between the fishes. Erythrocyte characterization coupled with morphological and cytogenetic studies is recommended for clearer understanding of the nature of hybrid progenies.
Haemoglobin polymorphism in wild and cultured African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822)

The blood group observed in the cultured female C. gariepinus were O (30%), A (10%) + and B (10%). The BD genotype observed in a wild strain of C. gariepinus indicates incomplete (partial) dominance and rare allele. This could be an indication of natural hybridization.

Fifty six spec imens orthe hybrid "tambacu" (Piaraclus mesopotamicus Holmberg, 1887male x Co/assoma macropomum Cuvier, 1818 female) werc collccted from fishfarm ofGllariba, São Paulo, to evaluate their haematology. Hematological evaluation of fish is essential to the assessment of their physiological status. This study describes the morphometric analysis and comparison of blood cell characteristics in Zanarchopterus sp., Gerres filamentosus Cuvier, 1829 and Leiognathus decorus (De Vis, 1884). The species were collected at two locations off the coast of Trang Province, Thailand. A comparative hematological evaluation was made to assess the effects of environmental conditions on the blood of the fish. Ten individuals of each species were collected from a seagrass bed at Libong Island, where human activities are increasing, and from a secluded sandy beach. Their blood samples were analysed using the blood smear technique. Erythrocytes of all the studied fishes were either elliptical or oval. The use and validation of fish health monitoring tools have become increasingly evident due to aquaculture expansion. This study investigated the hematology and blood morphometrics of Piaractus mesopotamicus, Brycon orbignyanus, Oreochromis niloticus and Rhamdia quelen. The fish were kept for 30 days in 300-liter aquariums, after which they were anesthetized with benzocaine and blood was collected from caudal vessels. In comparison to other species, B. orbignyanus presented the highest hematocrit (Ht), RBC averages and Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) with a particular range of data. Correlation of hematology and plasma chemistry levels in silver crucian carp Carassius langsdorfii

The correlation between hematology and plasma chemistry was examined in natural silver crucian carp Carassius langsdorfii. Three microsatellite DNA markers identified five clonal lines. Blood was obtained from the caudal vessels and analyzed using automatic analysis systems. The correlation between several parameters including erythrocyte count (RBC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), plasma glucose (Glu) and total protein (TP) was assessed by liner regression. Hemoglobin (Hgb) and hematocrit (Hct) as a function of the erythrocyte count, hematocrit as a function of the hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) as a function of the mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) as a function of the mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and total protein as a function of triglyceride (TG) were positively correlated for the five clonal lines. Different regression slopes (b-value) of RBC to Hgb and Hct were found among clonal lines, while no such differences were found among slopes of the remaining regression equation. This phenomenon suggests that the significantly different slopes among parameters, which indicated low genetic influence at the each parameter, clearly detected the genetic influences as the compound effect of these parameters.
