The Kamyanets fortress in statu nascendi The problem of the origin of Kamyanets-Podilsky city has been an object of interest for scientists for about 200 years. The work presents argumentation of the concept that the city was founded in Late Antique period, which is being considered as the stage of its origination as a fortress. Discovered within the boundaries of the Old Castle, a previously unknown fortification complex, it is attributed as a Late Antique fortress, which protected the entry to castrum romanum located on the Old City Island at the beginning of the III century B.C. The research of the Castle Bridge, connecting the castle with the city, allows us to consider a Late Antique via- duct reconstructed in post-Tatar-Mongolian period by Armenian builders. The results of historiographical, architectural, archaeological, chemical and petrographic researches enable to reconsider the foundation dates of city and of the castle, bringing the chronology of the first stage of their formation back to the era of Trajan wars. Thus, the article indirectly confirms the data contained in the historical sources about Kamyanets-Podilsky as about a city founded by the Dacians in the 1st century AD.
