Cambio de paradigma en la literatura argentina contemporánea: el caso de Roberto Arlt (original) (raw)

This dissertation analyses the process of the reception of Roberto Arlt‘s work from the perspective of the main stereotypes related to his literary figure: the so-called "knowledge of the poor" and "bad writing". The process is roughly divided into two phases: the initial rejection and the later vindication of his literary status, during which Arlt and his literature acquire different meanings and significations. The changes and innovations in literary, linguistic and cultural studies, as parts of the complex semiosphere, shape the perception of Roberto Arlt and, consecutively, determine his position within the Argentinian literary canon. On the basis of Hans Robert Jauss‘ Reception Theory, which set down the foundations of the future studies of the literary canon, we have studied the Argentinian literary canon formation process, understanding the phenomenon from the semiotic point of view developed by Yuri M. Lotman and José María Pozuelo Yvancos. In the analysis we have supported the notions of the Polysystem Theory (Itamar Even-Zohar), Selective Tradition (Raymond Williams) and Author Figure (María Teresa Gramuglio, Julio Premat). In addition, two more aspects, not usually related to Arlt‘s work, have also been analyzed: on the one hand, the concept of Authorship and, on the other, the Maelstrom, that powerful vortex that ―melts all that is solid into the air‖, read as an epistemic metaphor of his literature, which in turn is understood as an epitome of Modernity. Key words: Roberto Arlt, canon, reception, "knowledge of the poor", "bad writing", authorship, maelstrom.
