Influence of Emotional Intelligence on the Academic Achievment of University Students

The current system of education in Nigeria is putting the future of students in a race where everyone would be searching for a short cut for success in his life. This creates distractions to learning and focus to academic achievement in the university system. This study explore the influence of emotional intelligence on the academic achievement of university students based on gender and academic year. A sample of 60 students in Tai Solarin University of Education consisting of 20 male and 20 female; and 20 first year, 20 sophomore and 20 final year students were randomly selected to receive emotional intelligence learning system training programme. A post-test scores from Students' Academic Achievement Test was used for data collection. Hypotheses were tested using t-test and analysis of variance at .05 level of significance. The results of the study showed that there is no significant difference between male and female academic achievement; no significant difference in the academic achievement of first year, sophomore and final year students; and no significant interaction effects exists between gender and levels of students on the academic achievement of university students. This findings suggest that a balanced combination of emotional mind and cognitive mind for all university students will facilitate the identification, recognition and development of their emotional skills which will in turn contribute to their personal, academic and career success.

The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Academic Achievement Among Undergraduate Students at Madda Walabu University

Emotional Intelligence (EI) has been a popular topic of debate in the field of education in general and Psychology in particular. It is considered as a successful predictor of academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement among undergraduate students at Madda Walabu University. In order to assess the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement cross sectional research design was employed. Assessing Emotions Scale developed by Schutte et al., (2009) was used to measure the magnitude of emotional intelligence among students. Students' academic achievement was measured by cumulative grade point average collected from the registrar of the University. The collected data was analyzed quantitatively by using frequency, percentage, mean scores, Pearson correlation, and t-test. In general, the result indicated positive significant relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement, low emotional intelligence among students and significant difference between male and female students on their emotional intelligence. The importance of emotional intelligence on academic outcomes cannot be overstated. Several studies have been conducted in the past to shed light on the associations that exist between EI and these outcomes. Making use of Goleman's Emotional Intelligence model, the researchers investigated the relationship between the personal skills of EI and academic adjustment of secondyear University students in Akwa Ibom State. The correlational design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of all the second year university students from two universities in Akwa Ibom state. A sample of 500 students was selected for the study using the Taro Yamane Sampling formula. The subjects were drawn using simple random sampling technique. The instruments for data collection were adopted standardized "National Health Service Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire" (NHSEIQ) and "Academic Adjustment Scale" (AAS). Emotional Intelligence as Correlate of Academic Performance among Junior Secondary School Students in Katsina Metropolis

The study examined emotional intelligence as correlate of academic performance among junior secondary school students in Katsina metropolis. A sample of 384 students was drawn from a population of (8757) junior secondary schools students in the metropolis. Two instruments were used in obtaining the data for the study; an adopted version of Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (EIQ) designed by Kolo (2006) and JSS II results in English and Mathematics which was used to measure academic performance of students. Three hypotheses were tested and results obtained showed that emotional intelligence was related to academic performance for both males and females junior secondary school students in Katsina metropolis. Based on these findings therefore, it is recommended that effort should be made towards training in the development and sustenance of positive motivation. Conclusively, it is pertinent to emphasize on developing self-awareness among learners so as to produce learners who are emotionally stable, capable of controlling their moods, resilient to stress, rational in their thinking, flexible in their approach, confident in themselves, and with positive attitude towards themselves and their abilities.

Emotional aspects are very important in influencing the excellence of a student. Many past studies have proven that emotional intelligence affect academic achievement. Therefore, this study is aimed to identify students' emotional intelligence level and to what extent emotional intelligence influences students' academic achievement. Emotional intelligence combines the important aspects of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, adaptability, moods and stress management skills, which have an effect on students' academic performance. Thus, this study was carried out with the aim of examining the impact of emotional intelligence on students' academic performance of information technology and business management students. The independent variable includes self-awareness, self-motivation, empathy, emotional management and interpersonal skills while the depended variable is academic performance. This research adopted descriptive and explanatory research design. Adjustment of freshmen in the higher institution depends on a variety of factors which can have both positive and/or negative influence on their ability to stay focused, motivated and succeed in the school system. Parents, Counsellors Teachers, Curriculum experts and other significant stakeholders have also expressed considerable concern about the level of adjustment of the students especially among the first year students.
