This article analyzes a case of dissemination of scientific ideas through the translation in the periodical press by Venezuelan scholar Andrés Bello of some excerpts of Elements of Physics or Natural Philosophy (1827) by Scottish physician Neil Arnott. It offers an approach to the social and the political background in which this translation was written, whose excerpts were first published in 1827 in London in El Repertorio Americano, and then republished in November 1831 in the Chilean newspaper El Araucano. The work focuses on the role of Bello as a popularizer, revealing a pedagogical endeavor to educate readers with useful scientific knowledge. Finally, it presents an analysis of the translation by comparing the source text with the target text to identify the strategy of language simplification carried out by the translator, given the journalistic background of the translation, along with the presence of translation procedures such as concentration, implicitation, concision, and omissions.

This reading of Andres Bello's edition of the POEMA DE MIO CID, focuses on the corrupted state of a manuscript conceived as a foundational masterpiece in a Hispanic philological tradition. To organize his reading, Bello embraced the task of restoring the text and guide its eventual readers, locating the poem as the beginning of a cultural journey for an extraordinary variety of participants, from different places and times, in the shape and development of a literary text. Bello discussed the presumably authorized affiliation to its language to identify and overcome the interpretative limits of a medieval piece of writing articulating a long standing critical dialogue.
