Design of Living Spaces in Dormitories

In this study, the aim is to determine basic features for an ideal dormitory room by finding answers to questions relating to dorm students' friendly relationships with each other, planning dorm rooms, study environments, heating and lighting services, relationship between dorm rooms and WC-bathroom spaces. Among the second grade students studying at Karadeniz Technical University Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture, 6 applicants have been – through accidental sampling method – selected for the study and each of the applicants has been interviewed and all the data collected has been evaluated by applying qualitative analysis method.

A STUDY OF NEW DESIGN CONCEPTS IN STUDENT HOUSING APPLIED TO THE ITALIAN URBAN CONTEXT

the paper consists of three parts. The first one deals with the origins of university and consequently with the attached structures such as the university residences. >From this premise we can clearly understand that university and student residences have always been linked to the urban centre by a symbiotic relationship. The second part is about the most important normative references and includes the illustration of the organizational models suggested by the regulations considering the contemporary building situation. Two examples of student housing are finally proposed: a reused building in Turin and a new structure in Pisa, through which we illustrate the same urban redevelopment problems.

Architectonic analysis of common facilites in European student hostels in 21st century

Facta universitatis - series: Architecture and Civil Engineering, 2013

At the global level, the University campuses represent a dominant type of organization of all the living activities of students. This paper dealt with the architectonic analysis of common features of the recent European student hostels, which were constructed as standalone buildings. The analysis presents the advantages and shortcomings of such spatial organization. In detail are considered the common facilities, which are present to a significant degree in such spatial organization, and which can serve as models for construction of student hostels in Serbia.

Spatial Organisation Concept of Two-Entrance Apartment [Koncept prostorne organizacije stana sa dva ulaza]

Facta Universitatis: Architecture and Civil Engineering, 2019

The location of the entrance and its relation to the main functional apartment groups in multi-storey, multi-family buildings, is to a great extent determined by the organizational concept of the apartment. The apartments with auxiliary entrances are less present in practice, majority of apartments fit the spatial frame of the building itself. The apartments can border with the next apartment on the same floor, be oriented towards one or more facades, but what is of key importance in determining the number of apartment entrances and their positioning is the size of contact zone between the apartment and common communication areas, as well as the configuration of the apartment. The aims of this paper include the analysis of the main positions of the entrance and the concepts of apartment organization that they determine, analysis of characteristic concepts of two-entrance apartments in multi-storey, multi-family buildings and re-examination of the relation between the introduction of the additional entrance and the necessity of having constant or occasional segregation of certain activities in them. Položaj ulaza i njegov odnos prema osnovnim funkcionalnim grupama u stanu u višespratnim višeporodičnim objektima, u velikoj meri određuje koncept organizacije stana.

The Socialist Apartment in Yugoslavia - Paradigm or Tendency [Socijalistički stan u Jugoslaviji - paradigma ili tendencija]

Spatium, 2018

The development of residential architecture in Yugoslavia during the period of socialism had its peak in the 1960s and 1970s. Significant progress in construction was accompanied by housing research directed towards finding the optimal urbanistic solutions for the newly formed lifestyle of the socialist society. The tendency was to “pack” as many residential units as possible into each building, almost up to the limits of the functional minimum, at the same time with the aim of setting a more humane pattern of living. Innovative theoretical ideas were developed at leading housing research centers and then spread at conferences, consultations, expositions and architectural contests. Top quality design concepts were mostly obtained through architectural contests, which, among other things, also served the purpose of testing theoretical principles and new concepts of residential patterns on actual examples. Although the term “socialist apartment” seems to be accepted in practice, in the scientific sense, it has not been sufficiently explored or examined. The aim of this paper is to explore whether there was a certain architectural pattern as a form of response to the specific socio-economic conditions in Yugoslavia, in terms of a functional scheme that architects followed and which could be defined by the term “socialist apartment”.

Spatial and Service Design: Guidelines Defining University Dormitories1\

2018

Thispapercontributestothediscussionaboutrelationshipsbetween spatial and service design and how these two disciplines can interact and influence each other to achieve more complexity, capability and synergy in in a specific case such as university dormitories. Dormitories, university campuses, and schools, can be considered as urban community hubs through which syn- ergistic relations between the institution and the surrounding neighborhood take place. The paper investigates how dormitories can, starting with the contribution of the students, perform strategic actions in the socio-cultural and civil regen- eration of urban contexts. The aim is to delineate the various interactions and effective synergies, especially in relation to the most vulnerable and marginal- ized facets of the community, looking at the students’ dorm as places of social cohesion. The methodology is related to community-centered design using for example co-design tools to present relationships between spatial and service design particularly through the context of a collaborative design studio and the technical department of Politecnico di Milano.

Living and Learning: A New Identity for Student Housing in City Suburbs Multicultural processes

Regeneration of the Built Environment from a Circular Economy Perspective, 2019

The role of student housing in academic formative paths is rapidly changing and increasing in importance. According to international trends, university resi-dencies are shifting their function from mere dormitories for students to more open structures for urban territories and the local population and are starting to be considered as important opportunities for enhancing and revitalizing the peripheral and problematic contexts in which they often are located. The case of the Politecnico di Milano is emblematic, due to the large investments the university injected into this sector over recent years, leading to the opening of three new residencies in the suburbs of Milan. This chapter reports on the activities developed by the authors over the last few years, aiming at fostering a more direct relationship among academic knowledge, educational strategies, and urban contexts. This comes via the experimentation of new forms of didactic and research, which attach great importance for university residencies for their possibility to share services, facilities, knowledge among students and the local population. The research focuses on the consequences of this change not only in sociological terms, but also in architectural ones, considering the new implications for the morpho-techno-typological design of structures. The results aim at going beyond the rigid constraints of the current regulation, developing a more open approach to design, which could be a starting point for the advisable revision of the law 338/2000, which is now 20 years old.
