The South Caucasus: Becoming a Region or Trying Not to Be ONE?1

A strip of land situated between the Mediterranean and the Black Seas, the post-Soviet Caucasus embarked on a painful identity quest at the turn of the third millennium. This – still ongoing – quest involves several daunting choices: between Moscow, Washington and Brussels, between oil and democratic values, and between feudal realities and revolutionary ideals. Throughout the last decade, the Yerevan-based Caucasus Institute has been conducting in-depth research of the conflicting and often subtle trends in the regions’ politics. This volume contains a selection of research papers published by the Caucasus Institute since 2001 in Armenian, Russian and English, which best represent the challenges faced by this varied region at this crucial stage of development.

New Geopolitics of the South Caucasus

The article examines new trends and development in the South Caucasus. The author identifies five factors which affect the foreign policy of regional countries as well as regional powers. These factors are the Georgian-Russian war of 2008, the US-Russian “reset”, the global financial crisis, the political transformation in the countries which have undergone “color revolutions”, and the Armenian-Turkish rapprochement. The author believes that the change in the geopolitical layout of the region will turn the countries of the South Caucasus further from the West. At the same time, they are not going to be fully embraced by Russia. A balancing act between the US, EU and Russia will be most likely their policy choice.

International Conference “South Caucasus: Current Challenges to Stability and Security”

The international conference was held within the framework of the topic "Transformation of the South Caucasus power balance and the Artsakh war of 2020: trends of regional developments under the new geopolitical realities" (code 21T-5F218) financed by the Higher Education and Science Committee of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports. The group has been conducting research since 2021. As a culmination of their efforts, a collective monograph presenting the findings will be published in 2024.
