THE MENACE OF FAKE NEWS AND ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA: A STUDY IN INDIAN CONTEXT
Fake news, also known as false news, has been a much-discussed phenomenon since the epochal Brexit referendum and the election of Donald Trump as U.S. President, yet has resurfaced in a major way in the past weeks with news of the Facebook Cambridge Analytica data crisis. Earlier, 'Fake news' has been adjudged the word of the year (2017) after its lexicographers found it had a "ubiquitous presence' over the last year. Fake news is one of the worst kinds of rumours spread with malicious intent. It spreads like any conventional rumors, but as new research unveiled, fake news travels six times faster than true, un-adulterated, unbiased news on social media. Also, the flow of false news is not enhanced by automated fake profiles called bots. People push false news more. The research shows that false news is 70% more likely to be retweeted compared to true news. As the number of consumers grow on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp and their ilk, fake news generators are going on overdrive trying to spread their own agenda- or, in many cases, just for fun. In India, the menace of fake news, doctored images and videos are already having a telling effect on the media. Whatsapp is a major platform for the exchange of both true and false news. Unlike Twitter, Whatsapp is a private messaging service. Fake news has got political implication too, especially during elections in India. Unfortunately, there is no law in existence in India to check the fake news. In order to check the menace of the fake news, a stringent law is the need of the hour. This paper focuses on different aspects of fake news and its ramifications, specially in reference to India. Keywords: Fake news, Social Media, Bots, Echo Chambers, Algorithm.
