Safeguarding a living heritage : a model for the architectural conservation of an historic Islamic district of Kudus, Indonesia

1994

Conserving places of architectural heritage value is of prime importance for Indonesia. Multi-ethnic developing nations must retain local character while creating a national, multi-ethnic identity. During periods of rapid socio-economic change, one must both anticipate a dynamic development process and protect architectural heritage places; thus, attempts to safeguard culturally-significant living structures are crucial. The architectural conservation movement in Indonesia is still largely in its infancy; a strategy for its development is greatly needed. This strategy should incorporate an understanding of the scope of heritage conservation, development of an appropriate model, and the establishment of mechanisms for implementation. Lessons learned from the experience of other countries may constitute an invaluable resource. The choice of an intact yet decaying historic urban structure as a case study can provide a useful example for practical application." This thesis attempts to develop a model for safeguarding Indonesia's architectural heritage, with the historic Islamic district of Kudus serving as a case study. A fourstep procedure is proposed as the model. It consists of : (1) examination of historic context; (2) assessment of cultural significance; (3) development of conservation policy; and (4) directions for policy implementation. This model is intended to provide future policy directions for those involved in the urban development of Indonesia and Kudus, including professionals, policy-makers and the inhabitants. In many respects an academic exercise, this research establishes the need for further studies which could only take place with greater availability of resources. A general literature review to establish the theoretical basis of the work was carried out in Australian libraries and through discussions with relevant experts. Field research allowed for the examination and recording of architectural, historical, socioeconomic, and administrative data of the historic Islamic district of Kudus. Research in Indonesia included archival research, literature review, site and building measurements, and photographic documentation, as well as interviews with inhabitants, relevant professional practitioners, and local officials. Examination of field data led to the development of an appropriate analytical method. Application of this method established historic themes, determined statements of cultural significance for heritage areas and structures, developed a framework for both general and critical inventories, and established priorities for immediate protection. A conservation policy was subsequently formulated through appropriate application of the theoretical base to the Kudus case and review of relevant international and Indonesian experience. This policy approach considers the district as a whole dynamic living heritage, integrates conservation issues and practice with an overall planning process, and generates community participation in a more conservation-oriented planning and design process. Primary, secondary and supporting programmes for policy implementation were identified. This model provides a structure in which Kudus residents, urban design professionals and government officials can develop a conservation policy for Kudus. It does not pre-empt strategic decision-making. Rather, it can serve as a valuable tool for conservation analysis and planning applicable to other places facing similar problems. In addition, this study contains important historic and architectural information to add to current knowledge of Kudus and to serve as a source of comparative study for other historic Islamic districts of Indonesia, particularly in Java. Finally, it is hoped that this study will contribute to the development of heritage conservation research in Indonesia

Sustainable development of Urban conserved heritage: An analytical study of Kursunlu Mosque In Ulus, Ankara

International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning

Sustainable design movement in Turkey and across the world mostly focuses on new buildings, with little attention on existing built heritage. Nonetheless, historical building heritage constitutes a majority of the built environment in Turkey. According to the statistics of Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, there were 106.359 registered immovable cultural heritage in all around Turkey at the end of the year 2017. It is thus important to investigate sustainable development potentials and make suggestions for conserved built heritage. The aim of this research stems from the importance of finding a clear visualization for urban design for cities in the present and future by means of sustainable development, which satisfies the needs of the present and protects the rights of the future. Hence, this manuscript first examines the sustainability potentials of a case study in the 16th century Kursunlu Mosque with its neighbourhood, located in the historic Ulus district in Ankara, Turkey. This research investigates the importance of studying the term 'urban conservation' within the context of historic Ulus area. Although the mosque is nearly walking distance to historic touristic destinations of Ankara such as the Castle, Ahi Elvan and Ahi Serafettin Mosques, Cengel Khan (Museum), Cukur Khan, Safran Khan and Hamamonu area, it does not attract much of the visitors, because of its lack of integrity with the nearby built environment and its restoration necessity. Research methods include literature and archival survey, in-situ observations, and interview with the local community. The analysis reveals urban conservation potentials of the area and sustainable development suggestions for the mosque with its neighbourhood. The major conclusion of the research is that sustainable development suggestions as well as conservation measures of the case study mosque and urban conservation analysis may provide the user and visitor increase and contribute to the revitalization of the building and the neighbourhood area in the long term.

The restoration of old mosques heritage in Pekojan, Jakarta

IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science

Recent efforts of restoration on the Muslim religious sites in Jakarta take place in several old mosques that were built around the old settlements (kampung) of creole communities in Pekojan. This historic kampung is situated on the western fringe of Jakarta Old Town since eighteenth century and adjacent to the other diverse ethnic groups' neighbourhood. The challenges emerge when the old mosque continues to expand its space volumes and adapt to accommodate the users' needs and so the expansion impacts the ethics of restoration. This research specifically took a case study in Jami Mosque of Kampung Baru as one of the heritage mosques built in Pekojan. The early process of the documentation and historical research found various levels of deteriorations and extensions in the building. By applying participatory action research, it showed the early efforts of restoration led by locals. This research also concerned with the responsibility of the owners, functionaries, community officials, and users towards the cultural heritage to be contested. It also extended the conceptual meaning of "ownership" of cultural heritage by definition in terms of religious building in Indonesia.

One of the cultural heritages is the temple named Pura Dalem Kayehan Desa and Kayehan Desa Alas Jeringo which both have natural springs that are used by all villagers in daily basis. These two temples are used for activities ranging from sacred activities (rituals and traditional ceremonies) to profane (bathing and washing clothes). Local community often experience difficulties when carrying out sacred and profane activities during the rainy season due to the low quality of access that is difficult to pass. Hence, there are no adequate supporting facilities to perform ritual and profane activities. Moreover, the condition of the temple is not well maintained, so it requires immediate treatment. This study raises the concept of preserving these two temples and water springs in Pedawa Village. This conservation is urgent because these two temples are very important for the local community but its condition is not maintained and well organized. Interviews, focus group discussions and field surveys is applied to determine the suitable conservation concept. Results show that the conservation concept applies the Tri Mandala concept (sacred area, middle area and profane area). Further, participation and needs of the local community also has become the important contribution towards the basis of conservation concept of these two temples.
