LIFE SATISFACTION AND MENTAL HEALTH OF AGED WITH REFERENCE TO NORTH BIHAR

The present investigation was undertaken to study the perceived life satisfaction and mental health of 60+ aged with particular reference to North Bihar. Total sample (N=200) comprising men (n=100) and women (n=100) were selected randomly from different area of locality of North Bihar. In this study the cities given priority for data collection were Darbhanga, Samastipur, Madhubani, Begusarai and Muzaffarpur. Life satisfaction Scale and Mental Health inventory were administered by contacting the subjects personally. Results revealed that life satisfaction was a function of mental health for both the group of aged men and women as positive correlations have been found. A significance of difference was also been found in terms of life satisfaction and mental health (dimensions-wise and overall) between the group of aged men and women, although, both the group have shown favourable inclination towards the degree of perceived reactions of life satisfaction. On the other hand, results also revealed that aged men had a higher degree of life satisfaction than aged women especially from where the sample has been drawn to undertake. The discrepancy in the results has been discussed in the light of exigency of situations prevailing in North Bihar. Keywords: Life satisfaction, Mental disorders. Mental health, INTRODUCTION

A Study of General Well-being, Life Satisfaction and Depression Among Elderly

Old age is considered as the last stage of development and is associated with decline in physical as well as cognitive functions. Several studies can be found where it is reported that old age is associated with a number of problems.Present study was planned to examine the variation in depression, life satisfaction and general wellbeing of male and female old age people residing in urban and rural areas in the NCR region.A sample of 120 (60 males and 60 females) with equal number from rural and urban areas was administered measures of depression, life satisfaction and general wellbeing uniformly by the first investigator.Data were analysed using descriptive (mean and SD’s) and inferential (2*2 ANOVA) statistical test.Results revealed that old age people living in rural area are significantly more depressed than living in urban area and the old aged people living in urban area scored significantly higher score on general well being measures. The interactive effect of sex and area of residence was significant (p< .05) only in case of life satisfaction.The implications of the study for the aged, their family, government and social agencies are discussed. Factors associated with the life satisfaction amongst the rural elderly in Odisha, India

Background: Life Satisfaction (LS) is an indicator of subjective well-being (SWB) among the elderly, and is directly associated with health and mortality. Present study deals with the factors associated with the LS among the rural elderly in Odisha, India. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using multi-stage random sampling procedure was conducted among elderly (60+ years) in Bargarh district of Odisha. The survey was conducted among 310 respondents. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to assess the adjusted effect of various socioeconomic , demographic, health conditions (physical and mental), social support and effects of multi-morbidity on LS. Results: Cognitive health was the most influential factor in determining LS among both men (β = 0.327) and women (β = 0.329). Individual's social support also plays an influential role in LS among rural elderly. Elderly who are living alone and have any sort of disability and had low score of activities of daily living (ADL) have also reported significantly lower perceived LS for both the genders. Conclusion: It is necessary to analyze and identify the major factors which can improve upon the level of LS among the elderly population. Better understanding of these factors can help in removing the superfluous anxiety of old age in the mindset of people which is pervading in the society.

Life satisfaction of Elderly people in urban and semi-urban region of Lucknow (U.P)

The present study was conducted to assess the differences in overall life satisfaction and specific domains of life satisfaction in elderly of urban and semi urban dwellings. The study is based upon sample of 400 elderly (200 urban samples and 200 semi urban samples) of age range 60 years and above 60 years. Life Satisfaction Index for the Third Age-Short Form (LSITA-SF) revised form of Life satisfaction questionnaire developed and standardized by Neogarten (1961)was modified and standardised for Indian elderly for measuring over all life satisfaction and life satisfaction scale developed and standardized by the researcher was used for measuring life satisfaction for specific domains of life satisfaction (health satisfaction, family satisfaction, financial satisfaction, personal satisfaction and social satisfaction). Results revealed that no significant differences were found in overall life satisfaction of elderly people in urban and semi urban dwellings. Significant differences were found in Health satisfaction, Financial satisfaction and Social satisfaction among urban and semi urban elderly.

Satisfaction with life among senior citizens in Pokhara metropolitan city: A cross-sectional study

Introduction: The number of senior citizens in the world is growing rapidly so life satisfaction is the best indicator for evaluating successful aging. The aim of the study was to assess life satisfaction among senior citizens in Pokhara metropolitan city. Methods: This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 325 samples from 17 cluster of Pokhara metropolitan city. Life satisfaction were measured through life satisfaction index-A. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were computed at a 5% level of significance. Study participants were aged 60 years and above, residing permanently in the study sites. Wards, households, and respondents were selected randomly. Data were entered in Epi Data and analyzed using statistical package for the social sciences 16.0 version. Results: Findings revealed that 53.5% respondents were not satisfied with their life. Likewise, age below 70 (52.4%), male respondents (53.7%), senior citizens (60+) living with partner (50.8%) were more satisfied. In multivariate analysis pension (OR=0.482, CI=0.248, 0.935), sufficient money for expenditure (OR=2.370, CI=1.362, 4.123), family income (OR=4.391, CI=2.019, 9.551), state of health (OR= 0.464, CI= 0.215, 0.923) and role in family decision making (OR=2.001, CI=1.055, 3.793) were positively associated with life satisfaction. Conclusions: More than half of the senior citizens were dissatisfied with their life. Financial state, state of health and role in family decision making are the main determinant factors of life satisfaction. Therefore, the authority body needs to be developing proper old age policies to resolute the socioeconomic problems of old people.

Life Satisfaction and Social Support: A study of Aged Women and Men With Reference to North Bihar, India

The present enquiry was aimed at studying the life satisfaction and social support of aged men and women with particular reference to North Bihar, India. For the present piece of research work total sample (N=150) comprising aged women (n=75) and aged men (n=75) randomly selected from different districts of North Bihar viz., Begusarai, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur and Samastipur. Subjects‟ age were ranged between 55 – 75 years. Data collected through questionnaires schedules individually from aged women and men by taking them in to confidence and assured that responses provided by them on the items of schedules will be kept strictly confidential. Having tabulated and analyzed the data, results revealed the fact that there is high significant difference between the group of aged women and men towards their degree of life satisfaction which has been statistically found significant at .01 level of confidence, although, aged men were found more prone to higher degree of life satisfaction than women. Moreover, aged women have shown higher degree of social support than aged men, hence, significant difference have been found between the group of aged at .01 level of confidence towards their life satisfaction. A study on quality of life satisfaction and physical health of elderly people in Varanasi: An urban area of Uttar Pradesh, India

Background: Longevity has increased significantly in the last few decades mainly due to the socioeconomic and health care developments. These factors are responsible for the higher numerical presence of elderly people leading to change in age structure, and a higher dependency ratio. In this juncture we need to reappraise the quality of life of elderly people. Aims & Objective: The main objective of this paper is to study the quality of life of elderly people of Varanasi city, India. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted of elderly people living in the four colonies (Mahamana Puri, Sundarpur, Nagwan, Samne Ghat) of Varanasi city. The results are expressed in terms of Mean and SE of mean. Chi-Square test, t-test and one-way ANOVA test have been used to compare the mean scores of quality of life score based on different variables under the domain of Physical Health, Interpersonal life, Economic status, Physical Environment. Results: A total of 166 old age people were included in this study. Out of 166 elderly people 121(72.89%) were Males and remaining were females. The mean age of the study population was found to be 63.95 ± 6.08 years. Majority of them were literate (95.18%). Eye sight weakness is the most prominent problem among the elderly. An overwhelming majority (61.45%) of elderly had an average quality of life, where as 24.10% and 14.45% elderly had a poor and good quality of life respectively. Conclusion: Majority of elderly had an average quality of life quality of life. There is an urgent need of social protection in form of assuring old age pension and compulsory health insurance.

Influence of types of living on life satisfaction among elderly of Lucknow city

Aging of population is one of the most significant global phenomena of the 21st century. The issue of aging is experienced by the societies of the world. The present study was conducted to assess the influence of types of living on life satisfaction of elderly in Lucknow city. The present study is based on a sample of 120 people 60 local home residence and 60 old age homes drawn from Lucknow city. Sample consisted of adults living in homes with families it was planned to assess the relationship between life satisfaction and place of living of the old age people. Researcher used standardized scale (Satisfaction with life scale, Diener, E) and self-structured questionnaire. The results of the present study revealed that there is relationship between life satisfaction and place of living of the elderly.
