CISSR Annual Meeting on Christian Origins (2014) -- Program Book

The Italian Centre for Advanced Studies on Religions (CISSR), founded in 1999, promotes the scientific research on religion, with a special focus on the history of Christianity and Judaism. The Center fosters the development of Religious Studies in the academia, organizing scientific meetings, providing support for post-graduate studies, and promoting cultural initiatives on religions. The annual meetings on Christian origins wish to provide a space for scientific debate and discussion on the broader field of early Christianity, including the research on the historical Jesus, the interpretation of the early Christian writings, and the history of the early Christian groups in the Jewish and Greco-Roman world (1st and 2nd century). The meetings take the form of “Programme Units”, coordinated by specialists and young researchers. Papers are expected from a wide range of perspectives: history, exegesis, anthropology of religions, comparative studies, social sciences, cultural studies, and so on.

CH 6010 Studies in the History of the Early Church (Fall 2023)

Imperial labarum, stone relief on a Christian sarcophagus, ca. 350 CE I. COURSE DESCRIPTION, OBJECTIVES, AND GUIDING QUESTIONS This course focuses on major themes in the history of the early church in the first five centuries, the truly formative period of the shaping of Christian faith and identity. It also serves as an introduction to patristics, the study of the Church Fathers. Our primary sources, over and beyond the New Testament, will be the Greek, Latin, and Syriac patristic literature, other relevant historical documents, and material bodies of evidence (art, architecture, etc). The course will investigate the social and historical context of Christianity's break from Judaism and its emergence in the pluralistic Greco-Roman world, with a view to understanding early Christian missionary life, organizational development, forms of ministry and worship, morality and ethics, and relations with the Roman Empire. Attention will also be given to some of the principal themes in the church's struggle for normative self-definition in its beliefs and theology: the Trinity, creation, the person and work of Christ, the economy of salvation, Christian ethics and eschatology. The ultimate objective of this course is to engage the student in the ongoing process of interpreting and appropriating the "apostolic faith," and to raise fundamental questions about Christian identity and cross-cultural witness that are relevant to the church in any era. Among some of the larger, guiding questions that we will address are the following:
