In 2018 an excavation of 20 × 20 m large and up to 5 m thick calcareous clays of the Langhian age was found. Rich and diversified assemblages of foraminifers with species Orbulina suturalis Brön. and Martinotiella karreri (Cush.) indicate early Badenian (in sense of the Central Paratethys regional stratigraphy) age of the sediments, zone M5b sensu Berggren et al. (1995). Variously deformed lenses and layers of fine-grained sand with several blocks of white calcareous silts and with two layers of clayey sediments with pebbles were found. The identified outcrop is part of a large landslide situated at the western margin of the Carpathian Foredeep. Samples determining the age of the landslide movements were taken from Badenian clays and from slope sediments with pebbles for study of palynomorphs. Very rich and diversified fauna was described mainly from the fine-grained sand creating layers in calcareous clays. The assemblage contained tests of foraminifers, spines of the echinoids, fr...

This paper introduces a newly begun research project conducted by the Silesian Regional Museum (Slezské zemské muzeum) in Opava which aims to thoroughly document folk architecture in the regions affected by coal-mining and industrial activities, i.e. the region around the cities of Karviná and Ostrava in Czech Silesia. Field research and the concurrent archival research will focus on previously undescribed log houses, some of which are currently under threat. The methodology used in this project and described in this paper is based on previous research conducted in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, with special focus on interdisciplinary cooperation.
„Naše ruiny jsou našim domovem“: Bezdomovci, domov a sociální organizace
Sociální studia / Social Studies, 2014
Cílem studie je navázat na současný stav bádání o vztahu bezdomovectví a představy domova v České republice. Na základě svého více než tříletého etnografického výzkumu bezdomovců v lokalitě středně velkého města (zahrnující aktivní zúčastněné pozorování a polostrukturované rozhovory s bezdomovci) a dílčích aspektů sociální struktury/organizace bezdomovecké skupiny popisuji (a) aktérskou definici domova; (b) nutné prvky emické definice domova; (c) opuštěnou budovu (emicky nazývanou Hilton), z níž někteří obyvatelé deklarovali, že ji považují za domov, a (d) vybrané mechanismy sociální organizace bezdomovecké skupiny. Základními pozicemi sociální struktury jsou submisivní solitéři, agresivní solitéři, submisivní skupinky a dominantní skupinky. Aktérská definice zahrnuje sociální vazby, pocit bezpečí, fyzické dispozice obydlí a jeho vybavenost. Sociální organizace odkazuje k utváření sociálních vazeb (sdílení, darování, půjčování), sociální hierarchizaci (trestání za neoplácení daru a ...
Evoluce v Hrdličkově muzeu člověka
2013
Hrdlicka's museum of man is a small university museum on Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague which was designed and opened by Czech-American anthropologist Ales Hrdlicka and other scientists in 1937. This article presents revitalization project of the permanent exhibition, new concepts in our work with visitors and use of new media theories and educational theories in museum practice. Museum presents story of human evolution, human variability, ontogeny a pathology. Students of primary and high schools are used to visit our museum regularly since 1950 – museum visit is an important part of biology curriculum. The exhibition has to meet visitors expectations, satisfy their needs as well as reflect current state of scientific knowledge. --- Museum in our understanding is a part of communication process where the institution is a partner to a visitor. With regard to current museum and educational theories we are trying to design our museum as an open and creative space...

This PhD thesis contains the results of comprehensive research into the Pravčická brána Arch and surrounding sandstone massifs with focus on gaining more knowledge about natural dynamics and evolution of this rock formation, its current level of stability and the weathering processes it displays. Non-destructive methods were used for this comprehensive study; these ranged from detailed field documentation to monitoring temperature regime of the rock and included application of a geophysical survey and control monitoring of the course of arch body deformation. Laboratory testing was carried out for strength parameters and salt efflorescences together with weathered sandstones were analysed for chemical compounds. Main operating factors were monitored simultaneously, which particularly involved changes in external temperature, degree of sunlight and chemical composition of rainfall. Conventional as well as entirely new assessment procedures were used in synthesis and interpretation of...
