This paper proposes a methodology based on indicators with local sustainability criteria, through the Framework for the Evaluation of Natural Resource Management Systems Incorporating Sustainability Indicators. Presents a comparative analysis of two localities which offer tourist activities in Huasteca Potosina, where water bodies are the main recreational space in the region, representing 78.57% of tourist attractions, broken down into seven waterfalls, two springs, a river, and a dam, thus forming the four main sub-basins for leisure and recreation; becoming a little diversified destination. In this way, it was possible to identify the conditions that limit and strengthen the development of sustainability in tourism, in order to foster a reflection on the commitments that can be adopted by tourism service providers to carry out actions that promote equity and improve the local communities conditions through the proper use of ecosystems from an ecological and social context, that allows to develop an alternative model to the monoculture of sugar cane and livestock, which requires a great deal of water resources and reduces Productivity of the soils, in addition to generating a small economic benefit to the local communities. The results offer recommendations that aim to contribute to the sustainable development of the region through the decision-making of the local population and the public administration.
