An Analysis of Digital Literacy Skills among Thai University Seniors

Digital literacy and the associated skills are becoming the basic and essential skill set of any employer that wishes to survive in a highly competitive world. Given the global importance of these skills for many sectors including education, medicine, information technology, tourism, etc., the researchers sought to determine which digital literacy skills were most important in using digital technology, communications tools, and/or networks to access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and communicate information in order to function in a knowledge society. From a multistage random sampling survey of 400 second semester university seniors finishing their degrees in 2014 at 9 Thai public and private universities, it was determined that the ability to evaluate was the most important skill indicator in the development of digital literacy. Analysis was conducted by use of LISREL 8.72.
— Digital literacy is an essential skill for enhancing university learning in a digital-based, global economic environment. Graduates must be knowledgeable workers, and therefore must have digital literacy skills to accomplish job tasks efficiently. This research studied 12 indicators of digital literacy skills through a qualitative research method to determine the most effective way to develop Thai undergraduate students. The informants were 42 undergraduate students at a public university and a private university selected through purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were employed to collect data from the volunteers. The interviews focused on three themes: definition and essentials of digital literacy; perception and performance of digital literacy in academic life; and digital literacy indicators needing improvement. The research data was summarized by content analysis. Results revealed six indicators of digital literacy needing improvement: invention, presentation, creativity, evaluation, legal literacy and safeguarding self. The students also proposed ways to improve themselves by seeking support from friends, faculty members, IT staff and librarians.

The present study aims to assess the digital information literacy skills among the library and information science students of the University of Delhi. The survey method has been found suitable to conduct the study in which a structured 80 questionnaires were distributed randomly among the students of DLIS and 72 (90%) of questionnaires were received from the respondents. After the analysis of the questionnaires, it has been found that the maximum 57 (79.17%) students were using a computer daily and they are familiar with MS office application software. All the students were well aware of Internet literacy skills and also they all are using the Internet in which the large number i.e. 66 (91.67%) students were using it everyday. The maximum 69 (65.71%) of students were using the Internet through their mobile data while a large number 69 (56.1%) of students using the simple searching technique. The significance of the university libraries that directly support the universities’ most fundamental duty, education activities, and researchdevelopment activities, is apparent when these duties are considered. Aiming to fulfill their responsibilities for modern university education, the university libraries try to satisfy the need of information that the academic society requires in today’s world, in which the information and ways to obtain it is provided digitally, by attuning to the technological developments. This brings forth the necessity of those who wish to obtain information to possess a series of digital literacy skills. In university libraries where digital technology is used extensively, it is thought that users who do not have or have low digital literacy skills will not benefit from these libraries at the maximum level possible. Digital literacy skills are important, for university students, who are qualified human resources of countries, to have the digital literacy skills to meet the needs of the current age. It is therefore recognized that the determination of the digital literacy levels of the users, to whom services are provided, is important in diversifying the services and training provided to the users. This study is conducted to determine the current awareness and skills of students concerning digital literacy studying in the first grade of departments of Psychology, History, Turkish Language and Literature (TLL), and Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literature (CTDL) at Bartın University. Using the quantitative research method, the data used in this study were obtained by using the survey technique. Within the framework of the responses of 226 participants to the survey questions, the study investigated whether there were any differences between students’ digital literacy skills and awareness based on departments and technology usage habits. The study shows that students’ skills and awareness about digital literacy vary according to the departments they study in and their technology usage habits. From this, it is suggested both to level the user educations prepared following the access to scientific information, and to provide the students with opportunities to improve their digital literacy skills, while keeping in mind that the students, to whom the university libraries serve, are of different digital literacy levels.

Educators in Malaysia tend to assume that most students today are digital natives (Prensky, 2001); they are considered naturally proficient with digital technologies and environments. However, studies indicate despite studen ives Bennett, Maton and Kervin, 2008, p. 3). Hence, it is dangerous to over generalize the digital literacy ability and expectations of students. Without these skills, Malaysian students will not be able to cope with diverse ICT modes to access and process information for academic needs and, later on, employment purposes. The objective of this study is to analyse the digital literacy competence of Malaysian students which is needed in order to access and use digital contents for finding information required in academic tasks. The study was carried out as a qualitative focus group study in which three groups were selected, one from three universities in Malaysia, and interviews were conducted after each group had participated in a sequence of Internet based tasks. Using semi-structured questions, participants were asked to describe and reflect on their digital literacy practices during these tasks as well as in their everyday lives. The results of the study revealed that the digital literacy competence of students depended on several factors, including English language proficiency, and the design of multimodal forms in digital contents. To conclude, by analysing the digital literacy competence of students and identifying barriers that hamper them from attaining these skills, educators can find solutions to overcome the stated problem. Hence, the findings of this study will contribute to the development of a digital literacy education framework which will enhance Malaysian digital literacy competence.
Needs assessment to promote the digital literacy among students in Thai community colleges

The objective of this research was to assess the need to promote digital literacy of the students under the supervision of Tak Community College. The population consisted of 152 students in Tak Community College, Tak Province, Thailand, registered for the second semester of the 2020 academic year. The research instrument was a digital literacy questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and the prioritization of the need. The findings revealed that the level of digital literacy skills of the students was moderate. The level of digital literacy that students expected, however, was very high. In concluding remarks, it was found that the highest average of the digital literacy skills of the Tak Community College students was the use of the spreadsheet program (PNIModified=0.30), followed by the use of presentation program (PNIModified=0.27), and the word processor program as the lowest average point of skills (PNIModified=0.23). Digital literacy has become one of the important topics in this digital age. It is the ability of a person to use digital technologies. It talks about the basic skills that a person needs to access the digital technologies in this digital age with the advancement of web 1.0 to web 2.0, digital technologies have advanced in every field. One needs to have basic digital literacy skills to access digital technology.The study is being made on the two schools of SLISc and SIS, CUG. It is found that the students have a basic good level of digital literacy skills. A comparative study between SLISc PhD scholars and SIS PhD scholars were also been made. The study found the SLISc PhD scholars are advance in digital literacy as compared to SIS PhD scholars.

While traditional literacy is reduced to the ability to read and write, digital literacy (DL) requires the ability to make use of digital tools to foster learning, communication, creation, productivity, performance, and responsibility. A digitally literate student can use digital tools to locate, select, and critically evaluate data. He also exploits these tools to solve problems, produce and share knowledge while being aware of reciprocal rights and obligations. Besides, he requires certain competences. This study aims to investigate the DL of Mohamed First University students affiliated with the English department taking into consideration the technological, cognitive, and ethical issues while using digital tools. The researcher adopts a quantitative research method to collect data through a survey which contains several items about students’ demographic, academic level, their ownership of, accessibility to and experience with digital tools. It also endeavours to investigate their perceptions about the use of these tools for learning, producing, and sharing knowledge along with their digital competence. According to the results, students often use basic digital tools for gathering data rather than using these tools for creating, producing, and sharing digital content. They have positive perceptions about the use of digital tools. They are aware of the safety and ethical issues. However, their perceptions about their roles in producing digital content are not very strong.
