Women's political participation:Article.docx (original) (raw)

Political participation of young women is an important area of increasing research in several parts of the world. However, little research exists with regards to the awareness and attitude of young women towards political participation in sub-Saharan Africa and particularly, Nigeria. This study, therefore, examines the awareness and attitude of young women towards political participation in Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria. The sample comprised 243 females who were selected through a multi-stage cluster technique. The Guttmann scale of coefficient of reproducibility was used to determine the reliability of the instrument and this yielded 0.85 which was considered as high reliability. The analysis for the study was done using simple percentages. Results showed among others that respondents’ level of political awareness is average – with a rich knowledge of community politics; respondents believe that young women are not being encouraged to participate in politics in several forms. Among several other recommendations, the study suggests that women should capitalize on their knowledge of community politics by attempting to participate in the grass root politics of their communities; not just as part of the crowd but as an instrumental part of the polity.
