Structural and magnetic properties of Fe impurities in YBa2Cu3O7 (original) (raw)
1988, Physica C-superconductivity and Its Applications
Samples having the general composition YBa2(Cu1−xFex)3O7−δ have been investigated using x-ray and neutron diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and bulk property measurements. X-ray and neutron data show that samples having x ≥ 0.04 are tetragonal. Neutron diffraction shows that this structure is very similar to that found for undoped YBa2Cu3O7−δ when the oxygen concentration is low, although, in the present case, the total oxygen content is found to be ≥7 for all concentrations. Contrary to the common statement that Fe substitutes onto the Cu sites, it is found from neutron diffraction that the Cu1 site is not occupied, and that Fe appears to have a substantial substitution for Ba. Both Mossbauer spectroscopy and heat capacity measurements show the presence of magnetic transitions at temperatures well below the superconducting transition temperature, with evidence for a large variation in magnetic transition temperatures.

A systematic study is presented of the lattice parameters and the transition temperature Tc of the YBa,Cu3_xFe.,Oy superconductor as a function of both the iron and the oxygen content. The system undergoes an orthorhombic to tetragonal structural transition with increasing iron content, however remaining superconducting. The Tc values of the doped samples are rather sensitive to their oxygen content, since the 55 + 5 K plateau of the undoped system (6.5 ~<y~< 6.7) does not persist with increasing iron content and none of the samples with x>~ 0. ! is superconducting for y< 6.64. The influence of the iron doping in the oxygen content of the system is also discussed.
X-Ray Study of Superconducting Y1Ba2Cu3−xFexOy Compounds
MRS Proceedings, 1987
ABSTRACTSuperconducting compounds of Y1B2C3−xFexOy, with x=0.125, 0.0625, 0.125 and 0.300, were studied using X-ray powder diffractometry. Two sets of samples were prepared. Samples quenched from 950°C to liquid nitrogen temperature showed a tetragonal non-superconducting phase, whose lattice parameters depend on the Fe content and differ from those of the yttrium 1:2:3 tetragonal phase. Samples oxygenated at 450°C showed an orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition for Fe contents higher than x=0.0625. The lattice parameters of this tetragonal phase were different from those of both tetragonal phases mentioned above. All these observations allow us to conclude that C(l) sites are occupied at least partially by Fe impurities.

Possible mechanisms for the oxygen intercalation in the ternary mixed-Cu-valence YBa.Cu.O.. oxide are considered, which account for the observed cell symmetry transi~orn{atl~+~tfiven by the oxygen concentration. These mechanisms are consistent with the formation of both single-and double-cell superstructures of ordered oxygen vacancies that have been encountered in crystallographic investigations of the high-To superconductor YBa2Cu30~7. Several now well-established factors appear to be important to obtain and control the superconducting properties of YBa~CuaO~7 materials usually prepared by high-temperature r~aetions of stoichiometric proportions of BaCO 3, CuO or Cu~20, and Y203, followed by appropriate controlled-atmosph~'e and heat treatments. All intermediate compositions can be described by the general formula YBa-.Cu~O.. in which x varies continuously from about
Oxygen content, microstructure, and superconductivity of YBa2Cu3O7− x
Journal of Materials Research, 1987
The influence of preparation conditions and microstructure on the superconductive properties of single-phase poly-crystalline YBa2Cu3O7 _ x was investigated by electron probe microanalysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and x-ray powder diffraction as a function of temperature in various ambients supplemented by resistivity and susceptibility measurements. Leaching of Ba was observed when samples were brought in contact with water. The TEM imaging revealed that individual grains have an extremely defect-rich outer shell and an inner core with a domain structure with a and b axes interchanged. The transition temperature Tc was found to decrease with increasing quench temperature in the range 400-900 °C. The Tc was observed to be linearly proportional to the difference in the orthorhombic cell parameters (b-a). Further implications are discussed.
