Instructional systems design and the learning sciences: A citation analysis

Learning sciences (LS) and instructional systems design (ISD) are two related fields that have shared interests in the application of technology for advancing human learning. While the two fields may have different values, boundaries, and in some cases methods, they also share significant overlap of content and purpose. We examine the relationship between the two fields through a citation analysis of three journals in each of the respective fields. The findings of the study indicate that the amount of cross-field publication is low, but there exists a trend for increased cross-field citation. As cross-field publication increases, we suggest that the existence of invisible colleges that link the fields will become more salient.

Instructional design and instructional systems design concepts different from the direction of the field lead to confusion as it includes similar use cases from time to time. Instructional design models have different characteristics, and in different areas, in line with the needs of nature according to the purpose of alternating the use of different models, it affects the efficiency. Each model is developed that fixing the underlying spots is the best way to a need for designs designed which varies depending on the model. How can we accurately define the differences between Instructional Systems Design and the Learning Sciences? I can’t tell you for sure, mostly because I am another one of those people who couldn’t pass an Instructional Systems Design qualifier if my life depended on it. On the other hand, I’ve been Editor in Chief of the Journal of the Learning Sciences since its inception, was a founder of the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS; www.isls.org), and am Executive Officer of that organization.
