During the implementation of the Master Plan for the Restoration of Santa María Cathedral in Vitoria-Gasteiz, a detailed diagnosis was carried out of the problems affecting the building, and a series of remedies were proposed for the comprehensive restoration and revival of the urban area surrounding the cathedral. This area includes the buildings attached to the cathedral’s eastern wall. Specifically, the block of houses num. 4 of the Historic Quarter, which are flanked to the east by Cuchillería Street, to the north by Santa María Street and to the south by San Marcos Street. In accordance with this philosophy, a complete archaeological analysis was carried out of the area next to the cathedral, prior to the restoration work. The intervention produced a series of interesting results, both from a methodological and historical point of view. Also, we should highlight the progress made in relation to the Archaeology of Architecture working protocols for the study of the urban system of a city. Finally, after analysing and summing up all the data, the historical evolution of the area has been charted; or in other words, we have traced the urban stratification process right up to the present day.
