Pensamiento Latinoamericano Agroecológico: the emergence of a critical Latin American agroecology
AGROECOLOGY AND SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS, 2020
Latin America is known for social movement organization andinnovation, and for dialog among different types of knowledge(‘ dialogo de saberes’ ). This has included dialog between aca-demic knowledges framed by Western science, popular andancestral ‘peoples’ knowledges and wisdoms,’ and so-called critical thought from global and Latin American revolutionarytraditions. From these conditions, we postulate thata specifically Latin American agroecology has emerged fromthese dynamics. While the global academy recognizes thatagroecology is simultaneously a science (in the Westernsense), a movement, and a practice, it is the emergent LatinAmerican version that is the most politically charged and popu-larly organized. This contribution uses a survey of selected LatinAmerican agroecologists to evaluate the extent to which sucha critical Latin American agroecology actually exists, and if so,what its characteristics are.

In Ecuador, specifically in the agrifood sector, populism is exercised through different strategies, which up the power strategies, had put land, the peasants' labour, productive practices and consumption patterns at the service of capitalist accumulation, reterritorializing the capitalist model. In this scenario, agroecology, is proposed as a science, practice and movement to transform the agrifood system. To allow the transition it is necessary to relocate agroecology in to a contrahegemonic process, and to re-evaluate the role of social movements. This document pretends to contribute to this discussion. From the analysis of the action repertoires of the Agroecological Collective of Ecuador, in the frame of Gramsci's thinking, the CAE is recognized as a collective political subject. Politics, spatial relations and the production of political subjects are identified as the main strategies that allow them to promote resistance and the reterritorialization of agroecology. How...
