Este ensayo analiza la evolucion del arte americano realizado por mujeres en un periodo que cobre desde las primeras decadas hasta el final del siglo xx. La primera artista que se estudia es Georgia O'Keefe, quien se convirtio en simbolo de la mujer artista y en un modelo a seguir por su relacion con las cuestiones de genero durante la segunda mitad de ese siglo. La fotografa Diane Arbus representa a la generacion prefeminista que aparecio tras las ss Guerra Mundial, mientras que la pintora Judy Chicago fue una pionera de lo que se deonmino como la Segunda Ola Feminista en los anos sesenta. Otras artistas calificadas como posrfeministas a pattir de los anos ochenta, como la escultora Maya Lin, Cindy Shermao y la fotografa Sally Mano, se han manifestado a traves de nuevas sensibilidades en cuanto al genero y han llevado a cabo practicas artisticas diferentes a las generaciones anteriores

This paper aims to analyze Mary Beth Edelson’s use of Goddess archetypes and highlight how Her employment was informed by the artist's goal to build a more nuanced idea of female identity. It will also provide a glimpse into Edelson's sharp critique of male-centric organized religions to describe the artist’s involvement in reclaiming women’s right to cover leadership positions in religion as in society. By focusing on the analysis of the series Woman Rising (1973-74), which best exemplifies Edelson’s ability to merge a strong visual apparatus based on the Goddess iconography and solid theoretical knowledge about ancient and modern rituals, the essay will underscore how Edelson’s employment of the collage should be considered integral to her whole artistic journey, and besides, a feminist, compulsive, strategy to criticize, deconstruct, and dismantle the phallocentric order enforced by patriarchy. For being extensively used across her career, I would argue that precisely collage is the medium that best encompasses the multiple hues of Edelson’s art and provides the artist with a highly humorous tool to cut out a safe space in which women can express the multiplicity of their identity and achieve a holistic-understanding of themselves, and their bodies, in a universal, transhistorical dimension.
