The present study aimed to examine an effective mathematics teacher's qualifications from the perspectives of secondary school students. The study was a qualitative one carried out with the descriptive model. The study was carried out with 40 students from all the four class grades of a secondary school (10 students from each class grade) in Turkey in the academic year of 2017-2018. The participants were determined using the purposeful sampling method. As the data collection tool, semi-structured interview questions were used, and the interviews were audio-recorded to avoid any data loss. For the analysis of the data, first, the interviews were transcribed and then analysed using the content analysis method. The results revealed that according to the students' views, the qualifications of an effective mathematics teacher were grouped under four categories: "personal traits", "communication skills", "class management and teaching methods" and "measurement-evaluation". It was also seen that regardless of the school type they would choose for their high school education, all the students had an idea about the qualifications of a mathematics teacher and that it was not much easy to become an effective mathematics teacher. In addition, it was found that there were differences between the views of the 5 th , 6 th , 7 th and 8 th grade students with respect to their cognitive levels and needs. In line with the qualifications examined, various suggestions were put forward to increase the effectiveness of the mathematics teachers and of the process of mathematics teaching.
HOW TO BE AN EFFECTIVE MATHEMATICS TEACHER
Ministry of Education has issued a strategic policy, the 2006-2007 academic year have begun implementation of the curriculum in level of education unit (or in Indonesia is Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan/ KTSP) in Indonesia. One of the factors supporting the successful implementation of the KTSP is the quality of teachers in academic, personal and professional. However, based on data from Ministry of Education, about 2.6 million teachers in Indonesia, there are 912,505 teachers who are not worthy of teaching in the classroom and 15% of them are not in accordance with the teaching expertise (Ministry of Education, 2006). In addition there are many teachers who are focused on mindset of teacher centered learning (Adi, 2007) with one textbook information. And there are many teachers who do not understand a variety of innovative learning and how it is applied in the classroom. Therefore, this article aims to offer the characteristics of effective mathematics teachers to creating a quality teacher in academic, personable and professional as a solution of the problems of education in Indonesia. So that character education can be applied in the learning process in the classroom based on KTSP and Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.

Principals and teachers are two important elements that must be at the forefront of improving the quality of students in the school. D o these two things affect learning achievement? It is what the researchers answered in this study. Therefore, this study aims to describe the influence of mathematics teacher performance and principal managerial competence on student mathematics learning achievement. The approach in this study is a quantitative (survey). The population was all mathematics teachers and public high school students in Central Lombok, about 793 people. Using the purposive sampling technique obtained a sample of this study were all mathematics teachers in one of the public high schools in Central Lombok, totaling 187 people. The instruments used were mathematics teacher performance and principals managerial competency questionnaires , and computer-based national exam tests to measure student mathematics learning achievement. Data analysis was performed using a regression ...
Mathematics Performance and the Role Played by Its Concomitant Factors
This study focused on examining the factors which contribute to the mathematics performance of the Fourth Year students of Secondary Schools in Argao, Cebu during the Academic Year 2012-2013. Descriptive method was used in the collection of data employing various adapted survey questionnaires and students’ performance ratings as secondary data. It was found out that students’ mathematics interests were positive. The students’ mathematics study habits were sometimes observed and their attitudes towards the subject were moderately favorable. The personal qualities of the mathematics teachers were always exhibited. Their professional qualities in terms of general knowledge and teaching skills were very adequate while classroom management and evaluation skills were always done by the mathematics teachers. Moreover, the study revealed that there was a significant relationship between the identified concomitant factors and mathematics performance.
JURNAL RISET PEMBELAJARAN MATEMATIKA SEKOLAH
According to TIMSS 2015 and PISA 2018 reports, Indonesian students’ knowledge and skills of mathematics are still far from adequate compare to other countries. Therefore the efforts to improve the condition need to done, not just by government but also educational institutions and movements. One of new movement is Gerakan Nasional Berantas Buta Matematika (GernasTastaka, 2018). This baseline study aims to describe and analysis the mathematical content knowledge of 100 elementary teachers from Lampung Utara regency that joined the workshop of mathematics teaching and learning which was developed and facilitated by team from Gernas Tastaka. The eight-question multiple choice pre-test covers Number and Operation, Measurement, Data Analysis, and Probability. Each question is related to specific mathematical content knowledge and skill that are supposed to be mastered by grade 6 students. The quantitative descriptive for each question was conducted to give more details on specific mathem...
Mathematics teachers' quality continues as an enduring concern until now. This study attempts to address this concern by considering private and public schools. It measured the quality of Mathematics teachers using three indicators: teaching methods, teaching competencies, and students' Mathematics performance. It used two schools in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte, Philippines, namely, Nasipit National Vocational School (NNVS)—a public school—and St. Michael's College of Caraga (SMCC)—a private school. The data were gathered using survey questionnaire, a researchers-made teaching methods inventory, and the Competency-Based Performance Appraisal System for Teachers Form (CBPAST) used by the Department of Education. Data revealed that teachers from NNVS and SMCC practiced frequently the teaching methods identified in the questionnaire. Their teaching competencies were high in all domains. These imply that the teachers of both schools possess the skill to teach with quality. Fur...
The Investigation of Strengths and Weaknesses of Primary School Teachers in Mathematics Knowledge
2016
This study aims to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of primary school teachers in mathematical knowledge based on self-made exam. This exam consisted of ten mathematics questions. To determine the reliability of our exam, Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was used and was estimated to be 0.74 by SPSS software. For this purpose, 80 teachers of grade fifth and sixth participated in Shiraz city, Iran. Teachers were selected by valuable sampling. The responses from teachers have been analyzed. In this paper, we used Descriptive Statistics for the data analysis. Data analysis indicated that the average mark of primary school teachers was low in some mathematics areas and they were strong in few topics. As a result, we propose several solutions for the education system in order to reduce the weaknesses in mathematics teaching.

The purpose of this study was to obtain a model of students ‘perceptions on the level of performance of mathematics teachers and to describe the relationship of pedagogical, professional, social and personal competencies to students’ final tes (UAS) grade by applying Structural Equation Modeling data analysis techniques. It is a statistical analysis technique applied to construct and to evaluate statistical models which form of causal models. The population of this study was all junior high school students in Merauke City, Papua. The study sampling technique was proportional random sampling continued to simple random sampling. The number of samples obtained was 436 students. The data was collected by distributing questionnaires of students’ perceptions of mathematics teachers consisting of 31 items. The questionnaires form a Likert scale. Based on the analysis, it obtained the model final test grade = 0.317 pedagogical - 0.085 professional + 0.059 personal - 0.138 social + e33. The ...
