Section IV – Behavioural Sciences in Sport A Comparison of Physical Education Students' Motivation Using Polish and Turkish Versions of the Academic Motivation Scale

Motivation is an important phenomenon in the realm of education, particularly in the university fields connected with physical education and sport, where it is necessary to accommodate and balance intellectual abilities and physical fitness. The present study tested motivation levels among university students in the fields connected with physical education and sport in Poland and Turkey. It was based on the Self-Determination Theory (Deci and Ryan, 1985), namely intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and amotivation which impact human behaviour. The Academic Motivation Scale was used (Vallerand et al., 1992). The aims of the study were twofold, first, to cross-culturally validate Polish and Turkish versions of the Academic Motivation Scale and second, to identify and compare the motivation to study depending on nationality and gender. Both Polish and Turkish versions of the questionnaire were validated and converted to a four-factorial structure. The findings indicated that Polish and Turkish students' motivation especially differed in amotivation and intrinsic motivation to know and experience stimulation. Moreover, Turkish female students proved to be at the lowest estimate of amotivation.

Achievement Motivation of Undergraduates Divided by Sport Activity

Sport Mont, 2018

This paper strives to contribute to performance motivation research and to point out diff erences in achievement motivation among college students in terms of sports activities. The research sample was comprised of 248 college students (men: n=141, 22.40±1.62 years of age; women: n=107, 21.78±1.49 years of age) from Bratislava. The respondents were divided into 3 groups according to frequency of sports activities: college students who didn't engage in any sports activities (non-active respondents), college students who engaged in sports activities 1 to 2 times a week (moderately active respondents), and those who engaged in sports activities 3 or more times a week (highly active respondents). A standardized DMV questionnaire consisting of 52 items was used as the research tool. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to assess the normality of data and the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney tests were used to test the signifi cance of the diff erences between independent choices. The coeffi cient η 2 , expressed the eff ect of the independent variable (sport activity) on the dependent variable (achievement motivation). The degree of dependence between the two of the groups of features was expressed by means of the coeffi cient r. The results revealed signifi cant (p≤0.001) diff erences in all three performance motivation dimensions. The performance motivation of the highly active respondentswas signifi cantly (p=0.000) higher compared to that of the moderately active respondents. Also, when compared with the non-active respondents, the level of performance motivation was signifi cantly (p=0.000) higher among the highly active respondents. Performance motivation and performance-supporting anxiety increases with the frequency of sports activities; on the contrary, performance-hindering anxiety decreases with the frequency of sports activities. Hence, our results testify to the fact that sport activity is one of the determinants for increased performance motivation.

Universal Journal of Educational Research, 2019

The Turkish validity and reliability of the scale consisting of 28 items was performed by Kazak (2004). SPSS (Ver.22) package program were used. The data are presented as frequency, percentage (%), mean and standard deviation. In addition, the normal distribution of data with Kolmogorov Smirnov test was used. Independent Samples t test was used to determine the differences between the variables (individual sport-team sport) with normal distribution. The significance level was accepted as 0.05 in the analyses. In conclusion, it was determined that the reasons of motivation of students who were doing individual sports and team sports depended more on intrinsic motivational factors, and that the order of importance of these factors varied according to the individual sports and team sports variable. In assessment of demographical data, frequency and percentage were utilized. It was observed that the most significant sport motive addressed by respondents was "For my physical health" (N=47; 23.7%). Then, this was followed by the motive of "For my fitness" (N=31; 15.7%). Ciljna Orijentacija I Samoprocijenjena Motivacijska Klima Kod Mađarskih Sportaša S Fizičkom Invalidnošću I Oštećenjima Vida I Zdravih Sportaša

Kineziologija, 2008

Achievement orientation and perception of motivational climate were studied in 59 athletes with physical disabilities (46 men and 13 women) and 58 able-bodied university athletes (23 men and 35 women). The study was based on the Achievement Goal Theory (Nicholls, 1984). Participants completed two questionnaires on the basis of which four dependent measures were recorded: task orientation and ego orientation, and mastery-oriented and performance-oriented climates. Results showed that women, regardless of the group, perceived a more performance-oriented climate in their sports than men and that athletes with disabilities reported a more mastery-oriented climate than able-bodied athletes. These results show that athletes with disabilities in Hungary exhibit as adaptive, if not more adaptive, motivational orientations than able-bodied athletes.
