FACTORS AFFECTING URBAN DWELLERS TO PRACTICE URBAN AGRICULTURE.
Urban farming is becoming an important activity among the urban dwellers in most developing countries. It is not only to ensure full utilization of the available space for agriculture, but also for sustaining the need of food among the urban dwellers. Since the related campaign and concept of urban agriculture are quite new in Malaysia, the objective of this study is to investigate the intention of urban dwellers towards practicing urban agriculture especially among the strata households. A multistage sampling technique involving stratified sampling was used to select the respondents. A face-to-face interview was carried out using structured questionnaires distributed to 400 respondents. The descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and binary logistic analysis were applied to analyze the data. The results of the study show that respondents have positive perceptions on urban agriculture and most of them have intentions to practice urban agriculture in the future. Factor analysis generated four latent factors that prescribe respondents intention to practice urban agriculture. These factors were positive attitude towards urban agriculture concept, confidence in practicing urban agriculture, societal environment and role model influences. A binary logistic analysis model was used to determine the socio demographic characteristics, and the extracted factors from factor analysis influenced the urban dwellers to practice urban agriculture. The results indicate that age, gender, educational level, and household size with the four latent factors mentioned previously were the likely factors that will influence urban dwellers to have intention to practice urban agriculture.
The Analysis of Urban Agriculture Development in Malaysia
Urbanization and the globalization of the food system are causing social, environmental, economic and political problems worldwide. Malaysian urban agriculture is one tool for sustainable development that has the potential to provide food or related services within or on the edges of urban areas. Urban population depends largely on cash income to access food and with unemployment increasing more urban households is unable to access food to meet their needs. Alternative ways of accessing food has become necessary. The goal of this research was to determine the current situation and the future potential of urban agriculture. A literature review was used to determine the perceptions of relevant stakeholders, barriers and ways to overcome those barriers. Study participants demonstrated a relatively greater awareness of environmental and community benefits of urban agriculture compared to food security, health or economic benefits. This study has investigated the impact of such farming on household's food security and income generation. This result in lack of adequate land use planning for urban agriculture and weak support to urban farmers. Malaysian urban agriculture is therefore constrained by lack of integrated development approach. Major challenges identified were perceptions of limited space, limited resources and education. Recommendations to address these challenges are also provided. Overall, the urban agriculture of Malaysia has potential to contribute to sustainability.

Residents have chosen to be living in urban regions in recent years largely due to the accessibility of job opportunities and public services. These led to a fast increase in the amount of people live in urban regions and cities. As a result, a large amount of the property used for agricultural activities was transformed into factories, housing units, and highways. This also resulted in a decrease in food production, growth in food prices and food import bills as the country now relies on food imports especially rice, fruits and vegetables, that can prevent the fostering of urban farming activities and then provide beneficial information essential to form it into a more consumer friendly program. Moreover, studies on urban farming are somewhat few in Malaysia and this study can become helpful for future research. The study focused on small-scale agriculture projects, such as community gardens, and community-level programs such as community supported agriculture and farmers markets. The study found that how urban agriculture enhances community resilience and wellbeing. This is the necessity for the Malaysian urban authorities to provide more proper identification and support to city residents and promote them to develop the practice of urban farming.
Factor influencing public participation in urban agriculture in Malaysia

This interest in urban agriculture in the country has set the scene to explore factors influencing public involvement in it. To gather information for this study a total of 640 households were interviewed via a structured questionnaire. Exploratory factor analysis was carried out and the results show that society recognition, attitude and the social impact of urban agriculture are the top three considerations for individuals participating in urban agricultural activities
Determinants of Urban Farming Intention among Graduates: A Conceptual Paper
International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences
Urban farming activities are important because they supply food resources to urban communities, greening urban areas as well as the desire to achieve community sustainability n the city. Increasing concerns over food security, unemployment, growing urbanization and limited space availability has generated interest towards urban farming. Urban farming is fast catching in Malaysia with many young people taking it up to grow their own vegetables in their backyards. Considering the potential of urban farming as a promising career path among youth, this study aims to examine factors influencing graduates intentions to engage in urban farming from the lens of theory of planned behaviour (TPB). To date, very few empirical studies have been conducted on graduates intention to engage in urban farming, particularly. The future study hopefully can contributes to the knowledge and understanding of the importance urban farming in a country, in addition to being able to further expand studies in aspects of urban farming in Malaysia. This study can also contribute in terms of recommendations to the improvement of internal policies urban planning, i.e. taking into account agriculture as an activity that needs to be preserved and continued in city.

Status And Potential of Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture In Malaysia
In Malaysia urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) play an important role in managing urban open spaces, provide employment and supply cheap food. The expansion and intensification of UPA production has also improved the livelihoods of farmers. Due to limited land space in UPA, maximizing crop production per unit area is an important issue. The use of technologies such as integrated farming, production of food crops under controlled environment and organic farming has been adopted by UPA farmers to increase productivity. Today, the temperate crops which can only be planted in the highlands in the past can now be successfully grown in the lowlands under rain shelter and aeroponic. One major constraints in UPA in Malaysia is marketing of the produce. Some distribution systems need to be developed that guarantee high price of UPA produce.
The practice of urban agriculture has gained importance due to the rising rate of urban poverty and population in the developing regions. In countries such as Malaysia, it also addresses food security by providing the urban dwellers with access to adequately nutritious, safe, acceptable and cost-effective food. While there are some skepticism toward urban agricultural activities in providing food for the urban markets, this study has nevertheless explored the existing evidence of its effectiveness in providing food security among urban dwellers and consequently reducing a large share of their food bills. Interviews of 360 households shown a positive statistical association between obtaining a sufficient quantity of food and adequate diet through engagement in urban agriculture. The results from this study indicate that food security can be derived from urban agriculture since it provides sufficient quantities of food, appropriate nutrition, cost-effective food supplies and reduction in food bills. This highlights the need for the Malaysian urban authorities to give more appropriate recognition and contribution to city dwellers and encourage them to expand the practice of urban agriculture.

Agricultural activities are one of the most important economic generating activities for the people of Kuala Terengganu. However, good agricultural practices that are introduced by the government are less implemented among farmers, despite the expected improvements in the quality of production, economic development, environmental and social well-being. The study was conducted to assess the level of knowledge and practice of farmers that have Malaysian Good Agricultural Practices (MyGAP) certificate. In this study, a total of 30 farmers from 33 who have obtained MyGAP certificates were interviewed by using closed-ended questionnaires. The participants were selected based on the recommendation by Kuala Terengganu Agriculture Officer. The results of this study show that these MyGAP certificate holders did have knowledge and managed to apply the GAP in their farms. This finding is important because with a good knowledge of GAP, the farmers can continuously apply GAP. This finding may be a result of the role played by the extension officer as well as the nature of the farmers themselves. Nevertheless, improvements need to be made from time to time so that the production of agricultural products will be at the optimum level in terms of quality and quantity.
