Changes In Critical Success Factor Importance Over the Life of a Project

A field study was conducted to investigate changes in the importance of critical success factors across the stages in the project life cycle. A total of A18 project managers or project team members c<irrently involved in a project were sampled. Results indicated that the relative importance of several of the critical factors change significantly based on the stage in which the project currently resides.
Critical Success Factors : En Route for Success of Construction Projects

The study of critical success factors is a means of improving effectiveness and efficiency of projects. Critical success factors have been identified in various contexts but there is no general agreement. Most of these studies are too generic and pose a question of applicability on a specific industry such as construction. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify critical success factors through a critical literature review with special attention on project execution stage of construction projects and to identify research gaps to be filled in the future. 40 external factors and 34internal factors were identified. 10 external factors and 19internal factors are repeated in 3 or more papers. More researches are needed on the relationship between critical human resource management factors and project success. Findings are instrumental for industry professionals, academics and policy makers. Further, it will add to the project management body of knowledge.
From Critical Success Factors to Critical Success Processes

After myriad studies into the main causes of project failure, almost every project manager can list the main factors that distinguish between project failure and project success. These factors are usually called Critical Success Factors (CSF). However, despite the fact that CSF are well-known, the rate of failed projects still remains very high. This may be due to the fact that current CSF are too general and don't contain specific enough know-how, to better support project managers' decision making. This paper analyzes the impact of 16 specific planning processes on project success and identifies critical success processes (CSP) that project success is most vulnerable to. Results are based on a field study, which involved 282 project managers. It was found that the most critical planning processes, which have the greatest impact on project success, are "definition of activities to be performed in the project", "schedule development", "organizational planning", "staff acquisition", "communications planning" and "developing a project plan". It was also found that project managers usually do not divide their time effectively among the different processes, following their influence on project success.
Success criteria and critical success factors in project success: a literature review

Project success criteria are dependent variables that measure the successful outcome of a project, while project success factors are the independent elements of a project that can increase the likelihood of success. In other words, success criteria are used to measure success whilst success factors facilitate the achievement of success. The purpose of this paper is to systematically record and identify project success criteria as well as critical success factors found in the literature and published in academic journals in order to form an effective and widely accessible framework to measure project success. A construction project failure primarily defined as disappointment in either one or the combination of cost, time, quality, and management. This study is an effort to identify the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) and the relationship between various attributes of a project success. A preliminary comprehensive literature study of previous research works served as the basis of the CSFs, which will be the guide factors to predict the probability of a project success. At the end of the study, the contribution of each critical success factor to the project success will be established.

Early researches of critical success factors were largely theory based; subsequent researches employed the use of statistics and continuously refined methods like neural network and the analytical hierarchy process. Determining Critical Success Factors of Project Management Practice: A conceptual framework
Critical success factors (CSFs) are inputs to project management practice which can lead directly or indirectly to project success. It encompasses many elements, which have to be synchronized to ensure the project delivery on time. The study of project success and the critical success factors (CSFs) is considered to be a mean for improving the effectiveness of project. Performance can be assured by identifying and eliminating the factors that cause poor project outcomes. Thus, project managers need better understanding of critical success/failure factors and how to measure them. The purpose of this study is to systematically investigate the causes of project failure and how these can be prevented, managed, or controlled. Constructions projects are frequently influenced by success factors' which can help project parties reach their intended goals with greater efficiency. The aim of this study is to investigate the critical factors leading to construction company success. Many critical success factors such as factors related to project manager's performance, factors related to organization, factors related to project, factors related to external environment became apparent from this study. This study will helpful to identify factors that influence project success.
A new framework for determining critical success/failure factors in projects
Only a few studies in the project management literature concentrate on the critical factors that affect project success or failure. Whereas many of these studies generate lists of critical success factors, each list varies in its scope and purpose. The success factors are usually listed as either very general factors or very specific factors affecting only a particular project. However, lacking a comprehensive list makes it difficult not only for project managers but also for researchers to evaluate projects based on these factors. In this study, we suggest a new scheme that classifies the critical factors, and describes the impacts of these factors on project performance. Emphasis is given to the grouping of success factors and explaining the interaction between them, rather than the identification of individual factors. An empirical study is conducted to test the practicality of using such a scheme. The statistical analyses of the results demonstrate the differences between the critical success factors identified in a previous study from literature and the factors identified with the use of our scheme. Many critical factors, such as factors related to project managers' performance, factors related to team members and environmental factors, became apparent with this study. The results are encouraging, in that practitioners support the use of this scheme for determining and analysing critical success factors and how systems respond to these factors.

This paper covers a thorough overview of project success, project success criteria and critical success factors for projects. There is no consensus among researchers of what constitutes projects success. Also considering that a project is successful or a failure, depending exclusively on whether it meets or fails the criteria for time, cost and quality is outdated and it's the narrow view, also in fact criteria for project management success. The surest way to perceive project success is examining its alignment with strategic organizational objectives. In order to achieve both project management success and project success it is important to identifying project success criteria and critical success factors at the initial stage of a project. Sustainability is becoming a critical topic and attracting researchers in recent years. The traditional criteria clearly put the emphasis on economic aspects and the social and environmental pillars get less attention because companies survival in the long-term depends on their ability to be profitable. The harmony between economic, social and environmental are required in project management. The purpose of this chapter is mainly to investigate the criteria for measuring the success of a project and the key factors of project successes, which practitioners can make use of to eliminate failures and thus improve project success.
