Effect of Educational Intervention on the Fruit and Vegetables Consumption among the Students: Applying Theory of Planned Behavior

The importance of consuming fruits and vegetables (F&V) in prevention of chronic diseases is known. Childhood play an important role in formation of healthy eating habits. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of education, with application of the theory of planned behavior, on improvement of F&V consumption. In this quasi-experimental study, 184 fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students participated were enrolled from Jan 2013 to Jun 2014. The samples were selected from 6 schools in Chalderan County, West Azerbaijan, Iran through cluster random sampling method. A theory-based randomized controlled trial in promoting fruit and vegetable intake among schoolchildren: PROFRUVE study

The main objective of the PROFRUVE study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a TPB-based intervention program at increasing fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption in schoolchildren aged 7–10. Methods Eight eligible classrooms were randomly assigned to the intervention (classrooms n = 4; children n = 90) or control group (classrooms n = 4; children n = 95). The intervention group received 14 sessions of 1 h during an academic year (from October to June) but the control group did not. Sessions were based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and focused on modifying FV intake. FV consumption was evaluated before, shortly after and 1 year after intervention ended using validated 7-day food records. Results FV intake increased significantly in the intervention group (+ 0.45 servings/day; 95% CI 0.17–0.74; p = 0.001) but not in the control group (+ 0.01 servings/day; 95% CI −0.20–0.22; p = 0.409) shortly after the intervention. Long-term measurement showed that 1 year after intervention finished, the intervention group maintained the effect (+ 0.52 servings/day from baseline; 95% CI 0.22–0.78; p = 0.003). Linear mixed model also showed that nested groups by classrooms differ from intervention and control groups regarding FV intake change (p = 0.002). Multiple linear regression showed that receiving the intervention (B = 0.345, p = 0.045) and FV baseline intake (B = − 0.383, p = 0.000) were associated with FV intake change after adjusting the model by age, gender and family social economic status (SES) (R² = 0.196). Conclusions The intervention program based on TPB seemed to be moderately effective in increasing FV intake and successful in maintaining the effect of the reached increase. Moreover, baseline FV intake determined the effect size of the intervention. Trial Registration This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. Identifier: NCT03400891. Data registered 17/01/2018.

Three-Year School-Based Multicomponent Intervention May Change Fruit and Vegetable Preferences in Primary School Children—A Quasi-Randomized Trial

Preference could be the trigger for fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption in children and could be modified by appropriate intervention to increase the acceptance of FVs. Can the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme Be an Effective Strategy Leading to Positive Changes in Children’s Eating Behaviours? Polish Evaluation Results

Background: The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme (SFVS) was developed to form the habit of eating fruit and vegetables (F&V) among children. The survey aimed to identify both the strengths of the scheme and areas that required support and strengthening in the further implementation of school schemes. Methods: The study was conducted from 2012 to 2015 among students of randomly selected 85 primary schools that participated in the programme (intervention group) or did not participate therein (control group). The F&V consumption among the students was evaluated based on the 3 day food record method. Other behaviours were evaluated via frequency and preference questionnaires. Can a school-based intervention increase children's fruit and vegetable consumption in the home setting?

Aims: Although previous research has shown the Food Dudes programme increases children's fruit and vegetable consumption at school, the evidence for the effectiveness in the home setting is more equivocal. The school environment is identified as a logical setting for targeting children's fruit and vegetable consumption however to produce sustainable changes in behaviour, it is equally important that interventions target consumption in the home setting. This study aimed to establish whether the Food Dudes intervention can influence home consumption of fruit and vegetables and the extent to which any changes in eating behaviour following the intervention were maintained in the long term.

Personal, Social and Environmental Factors regarding Fruit and Vegetable Intake among Schoolchildren in Nine European Countries

Objective: To investigate potential personal, social and physical environmental predictors of daily fruit intake and daily vegetable intake in 11-year-old boys and girls in nine European countries. Subjects: The total sample size was 13 305 (90.4% participation rate). Results: Overall, 43.2% of the children reported to eat fruit every day, 46.1% reported to eat vegetables every day. Daily fruit intake and daily vegetable intake was mainly associated with knowledge of the national recommendations, positive self-efficacy, positive liking and preference, parental modeling and demand and bringing fruit to school (odds ratio between 1.40 and 2.42, Po0.02). These factors were associated fairly consistently with daily fruit intake across all nine European countries, implying that a rather uniform intervention strategy to promote fruit can be used across Europe. For vegetables, the pattern was, however, less consistent. Differences between countries in cooking and preparing vegetables might be responsible for this larger diversity. Conclusions: This study showed that especially a combination of personal and social factors is related to daily fruit and vegetable intake in schoolchildren. This shows that a comprehensive multilevel intervention strategy based upon a series of individual and social correlates will be most promising in the promotion of daily fruit and vegetable intake in children.
