Interdisciplinarity, which is a part of the research paradigm in all fields of science , constitutes a real challenge in research. It manifests itself particularly in the diversity of the undertaken research topics, in the variety of the adopted research approaches (theoretical, methodological, normative, empirical-descriptive), and in the flexibility and the ability to see both the scientific problems as well as the economic and social needs. The ability to cross the boundaries between the fields of technical and social sciences, to identify problems and to seek solutions at the frontiers of scientific disciplines, the eager-ness to work in research teams diverse in terms of competence, age and skills, creating conditions for both the personal development and that of individual team members, breaking the stereotypical ways of thinking in the process of solving problems and anticipating future events are all features of an academic culture nurtured by Professor Joanicjusz Nazarko. The paper highlights the research of Professor Joanicjusz Nazarko, presents a review of his extensive scientific work and lists some of his publications.

Journal of Applied Economic Sciences is a young economics and interdisciplinary research journal, aimed to publish articles and papers that should contribute to the development of both the theory and practice in the field of Economic Sciences. The journal seeks to promote the best papers and researches in management, finance, accounting, marketing, informatics, decision/making theory, mathematical modelling, expert systems, decision system support, and knowledge representation. This topic may include the fields indicated above but are not limited to these. Journal of Applied Economic Sciences be appeals for experienced and junior researchers, who are interested in one or more of the diverse areas covered by the journal. It is currently published quarterly with three general issues in Winter, Spring, Summer and a special one, in Fall. The special issue contains papers selected from the International Conference organized by the European Research Centre of Managerial Studies in Business Administration (www.cesmaa.eu) and Faculty of Financial Management Accounting Craiova in each October of every academic year. This 11-chapter book is intended to explore the ways in which professional and vocational education and training (VET) can contribute toward building the emerging "knowledge society," particularly the ways in which the research and development community can take proactive steps to shape the emerging knowledge society. Executive summary This book examines ways in which professional and vocational education and training can contribute towards building the emerging 'knowledge society'. In particular, it explores ways in which education and training can support the generation of the 'action-oriented' and social knowledge that people require for living and working in today's world. A special focus of the book is on the distinctive Preface More specifically, Cedra sets out firstly, to provide a web-based platform for the research community to share information about research projects, resources, activities and events by means of the 'European research overview' (ERO). Cedra is also attempting to capitalise and build on knowledge that has been generated in European research programmes. The initial focus of this work is on learning in organisational and work-based contexts. In addition, Cedra is examining and promoting innovative research strategies in the context of the emerging knowledge society. This publication relates to the last of these objectives. Although it is targeted at a research community audience, it has relevance for a wider readership in that it argues that knowledge for living and working today can only be developed through a close partnership between action-oriented researchers, creative policy makers and innovative practitioners. In fact, a leitmotiv of the book is that knowledge development is a collaborative learning process that takes place in the context of active (but often informal) networks. The book itself is a product of a 'knowledge-sharing network' comprising internal Cedefop staff and external researchers who are involved with Cedefop in the development of Cedra. Cedefop would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have been involved in the production of this volume, which it is hoped will stimulate further reflections and concrete actions concerning the manner in which the vocational education and training sector, and in particular the research community, can contribute towards the development of the knowledge society in Europe.
