The Alienated Ethical Consideration: A (Post-)Marxist Critique on the Sport Practitioner

Throughout one's career, a professional sports practitioner is confronted with various choices to make, ranging from coaching a fair match or offering opportunities for selected individuals to win; showing true sportsmanship or venturing for a better compensation; to even sticking to one's home team or accepting a better offer. This is faced by all sports practitioners within the same industry: athletes, coaches, managers, and even team owners. In making these choices, individuals recognize essential ethical considerations. However, a primary factor that influences them-albeit without them knowing-is their alienated state. The preferences of the sports practitioner mirror society's response to the demands of the Culture Industry. He or she would opt to choose what the Industry is offering and uphold these standards. After all, sports is a social phenomenon that has undergone changes throughout the years, along with other aspects of society. It bears the impact of the Aufklärung, the true question of being enlightened and of being cultured. Thus, sports could be seen as constituting another level in the individual's (and even society's) alienated sphere.

Many books on sport ethics are topically-oriented, going into depth on popular dilemmas such as doping, discrimination, commercialization, and corruption. Yet Ethics and Morality in Sport Management by Joy T. DeSensi and Danny Rosenberg goes in a different direction. Their textbook progresses from principles of ethical theory to an exploration of how the application of theory might affect real-world behavior. It offers a rich summary of ethical theories and an up-to-date catalog of issues in sport management, but it may be of limited interest to sport philosophy students and scholars.

Ethics and Sport: Whose Ethics, Which Ethos - a Prolegomenon

The inability to make a distinction between the inner and the outer view, between the internal and the external values of a game leads to a misinterpretation of the ethos of a game as practice, and the ethos of the institution, which governs the practice. Unfortunately, that error has not only cognitive but far-reaching ideological consequences as well. By justifying the ethical pluralism through our discussion, we wish to point out that moral pluralism is not an apology for moral relativism. The moral autonomy of sport is trapped in the structure of the game, and is inadmissible per se, or has to be understood within the context of the distinction between the ethics of sport and sport ethics.

The Ethical Turn on the Sports Field

The assumption of sports being a natural and fair competition area has been challenged by scholars and athlete-activists in the last decades. This article, focusing on three periods in the history of-the agones in Ancient Greece, the birth and early development of modern sports, and contemporary sports relation-offers a brief historical analysis of how fairness has been conceptualized in different ways throughout the centuries. By doing that, it sheds light on the changes in the (self-)making of sporting moral subject over time. Drawing upon the broader anthropological debates which problematize the objectivity and neutrality claims of ethics, the article calls for a non-normative and contextualized approach to ethics within the sports field so that we may reach a better understanding of how sporting moral subjects navigate, negotiate, and challenge the existing ethical codes of behavior in modern sports. Bu makale, Antik Yunan'daki yarışmalara (agon), modern sporun başlangıcına ve günümüz spor ilişkilerine odaklanarak sporcu etik öznenin (öz-)inşasında zaman içerisinde yaşanan dönüşümlere ışık tutmaktadır. Etiğin nesnellik ve tarafsızlık iddialarını sorunsallaştıran antropolojik tartışmalardan yararlanan makale, spor ve etik ilişkisine normatif olmayan ve bağlamı dikkate alan bir yaklaşım çağrısında bulunmaktadır. Bu sayede, sporcu etik öznenin modern sporda var olan etik davranış kodlarıyla ne tür müzakereler ve meydan okumalar yoluyla ilişkilendiğine dair kavrayışımızı geliştirebileceğimiz savunulmaktadır.

Ethics of Sport: Contours and Divisions of the Discipline

Since 1976, when the first two articles on ethics in sport were published in the Journal of the Philosophy of Sport (W.J.Morgan, R.Osterhoudt), ethical considerations of sports have been growing and expanding. During the ‘90s they became the most dominant field within the philosophy of sport discourse (McNamee and Morgan, 2015, 132), and still are. In the author’s opinion, after 40 years the Ethics of Sport has reached a point where a large systematic in-depth analysis needs to be conducted. On the one hand, in order to do the first step, the author is trying to detect the most important editions of the Ethics in/of Sport within the community of sport philosophers, and, on the other hand, to investigate their thematic ambiguity in order to detect general contours of discipline and divisions of the fields. The research was conducted by the application of the critical analysis and comparative historical research method, as well as a critical review method. Four collections of essays (McNamee, Parry, Morgan, Schneider, Meier) and three authors books (Simon, Torres, Hagar, Arnold) stands out as the most cited, accepted and influential ones. All the editions begins with general approach and metaethical consideration for necessary grounding. As the most significant problems in sport they uncover Cheating, Fairplay or (un)Fairness, Doping, Genetic modifications, Gender equality and Social issues. Furtheremore, the uncovered problems P.J.Arnold brings into the convergent field of moral education. The Ethics of Sport as a discipline has clear contours and divisions, which are conditio sine qua non of a further growth and development. The biggest room for improvement is in the metaethical and normative area, through relating it to “general Ethics”. Also, Aretaic Ethics should be taken into consideration as a specific field.

ETHICAL ISSUES IN SPORTS: UNFAIIR ADVANTAGES DUE TO PRESSURE TO WIN AT ALL COST

The paper presents the role ethics plays in sports and implications for unfair advantages due to pressure to win at all cost. It highlighted a lot of unfair and immoral sports-related advantages such as drug use and abuse in sports, using of non-bonafide athletes, violence and hooliganism and among others. The paper made some useful conclusions as well as recommendations that will improve athletics in modern sports such as NUGA and Olympic Games.

Sociological Approach on Sports Ethics in a Context of Social Change

In exploring sports ethics as a sociological phenomenon, I have tried to demonstrate how alterations in the nomos of the field of competitive practices (in the sense of Bourdieu), have unexpectedly unleashed a chain of events that have ultimately weakened the ethical principles of modern sport, imposing contradictions upon the way these are manifested in practice. Our theoretical approach to ethics was developed from the contribution of Durkheim, Weber and Elias.
