Journal of Sustainable Development in Africa, 2019
Colonial heritage has been viewed from two different points of views. First, some take a positive stance arguing that it has to be managed like any other forms of heritage regardless of the associations attached to it. Others view the management of colonial heritage negatively maintaining that it is not relevant as it provokes bad emotions and such heritage resources should be discarded. This paper takes a positive approach to the management of colonial heritage in Zimbabwe because the history of the country is incomplete once colonial heritage is removed from the scene. The paper also aims at evaluating the concept of sustainability by identifying the problems, challenges and future of an African urban city in the management, preservation, conservation and presentation of the city's colonial heritage. To identify these, the research mainly used Jackson, (1986) in comparison to the contemporary use and state of colonial heritage. It was observed that colonial heritage in Harare comes in different forms such as historic buildings, colonial statues and colonial streets. However, due to the myriad challenges facing Zimbabwe, the management of Harare's colonial heritage is compromised and these challenges create pressure on the available yet limited resources ultimately affecting the sustainability of these heritage resources. Consequently, we identified a 'negligence' management approach that characterise colonial heritage in the city of Harare. Lastly, this paper provides evidence of little investment of this particular heritage resource, hence, calls for more concerted efforts from the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) and Harare City Council geared towards sustainable heritage management.
Buildings
Historical buildings have inhabited every epoch of history. Some of these built legacies are now in ruins and dying whilst others are somewhat undamaged. Knowledge of conservation techniques available today has allowed us to understand more innovative ways of conserving the built heritage. Such techniques are, however, incompatible with the building materials available in our historical epoch and environment. People seek to reclaim the forgotten cultural heritage in the midst of the heritage conservation era while bearing in mind that previous work seldom takes into account the inventive preservation methods of today. This study aims to explore the innovative built heritage conservation practice in the Kano metropolis, to detect deterioration and incorporate traditional wisdom and contemporary innovation according to modern urban development. The study adopted qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The descriptive research explains, examines, and interprets prevailing pra...
Role of Architectural Preservation Processes on the Permanence of Heritage Buildings of Value
Kurdistan journal of applied research, 2022
Architectural heritage is the cultural and civilizational achievements that man inherited from his ancestors, acquiring a qualitative value that has proven its importance and originality in resisting the forces of change. It is becoming a visual reference. The architectural heritage has been exposed to natural and human factors that caused much damage. This requests to deal with these factors at every level through joint action, which includes the maintenance and protection of heritage buildings. One of the essential parts of the preservation process is the reuse of the building, whereby an actual or new function is given to the building to preserve, sustain and reconfigure it in a way that preserves its originality, composition, and balance without compromising its relationship with the environment. The research problem is the fragile focus on the importance of functional value when starting the architectural preservation work, even though it requires an in-depth study of the extent of the impact of this change on preserving the heritage value of the building. The study aims to clarify the process of preservation in heritage buildings and the use of the rehabilitation process based on the architectural characteristics of the building. For this purpose, the analytical method approach of pre-and post-conservation blueprints was used through photographs to illustrate the impact of functional change in preserving the building's heritage value. The new role can introduce new values, such as political, historical, or social, to satisfy the needs of the new structure. From here, the research concludes that preserving the permanence of the architectural heritage can be

Enganging the past of the city through the conservation of heritage building
IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2017
Built heritage is a physical representation of culture that provides a connection with the past and important for aesthetic and symbolic values for the city. The conservation of built heritage is a necessary not only to engage with the identity of but also to sustaining development in the city. However, heritage buildings are vulnerable to development and modernization. The paper examines a colonial building in Jakarta that has been converted into different functions through various levels of physical modifications. As a case study is Cut Meutia Mosque in Menteng, designed by a Dutch architect PAJ Moojen during the Dutch late colonial era. The building was initiated in 1912 as N.V. Bouwploeg, a Dutch architecture firm that developed the nearby residential area of New Gondangdia. The New Gondangdia, including Menteng as its central area, was developed according to modern garden city principles. During its lifetime, the building was used for different purposes such as a post office and a train company office. After Ali Sadikin's term as Governor of Jakarta, the building was converted into a mosque. The architecture of the building follows the Dutch Rationalist style but adapts to local climate such as a ventilation tower in the center of the building to regulate the temperature inside. Through historical and field research, this paper discusses the benefits and possible distortions of history manifest in the transformation of colonial buildings. Moreover, learning from the conservation of building heritage and urban area in the city may support the idea of livable memory of urban area and sustainable city.

This study explores the state of conservation of historic buildings and the challenges facing their conservation from the perspective of resident in Kilwa Kivinje in Tanzania. The findings based on observation of 34 buildings indicate that the majority are in a relatively poor state. Ethnographic inquiry with 22 residents indicates that this situation is due to not only a limited awareness of conservation issues and responsibilities, but also sociopsychological and relational challenges such as a limited sense of heritage ownership, the lack of interest and motivation to conserve, neglect by owners and occupants and lack of trust in the conservation authorities; and socioeconomic challenges such as limited economic benefits and scarcity of resources. Residents also perceive that there is weak enforcement of antiquities legislation, limited assistance from the antiquities' agencies and that they are not involved in the decision-making process. Unlike past research that engaged in the authoritative discourse to explain the challenges of conserving heritage, this study has engaged in the under-researched resident discourse. It thus broadens our understanding of the challenges and further enlightens experts on the significance of considering residents' perspectives when designing and implementing conservation strategies. It also makes broad locally-based practical recommendations to cultural heritage management in Kilwa Kivinje and related sites in order to rectify the situation of poor state of conservation.
The State of Architectural Heritage Preservation in Ghana: A Review
Cogent Arts & Humanities, 2020
The link between past and present generations can only be maintained with effective preservation of cultural (Architectural) heritage. Architectural Heritage Preservation (AHP) is under threat in Ghana with an apparent dwindling awareness, unrelenting teardowns and destruction of historic buildings and places for other infrastructure development and spontaneous housing settlements. This paper seeks to review literature to establish the need to conduct further research on the state of architectural heritage preservation in Ghana. This research is underpinned with interpretivism and theoretically assesses the state of AHP in Ghana through review of literature. Literature reviewed revealed low publicity concerning heritage preservation, inadequate human resource responsible for heritage preservation and need to improve Ghana's Architectural Heritage management. The study therefore recommends further research in heritage studies to ensure effective protection and preservation of Ghana's rich architectural heritage.
