As elegantly demonstrated in Albert Einstein’s quotation ‘Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count; everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted’, the assessment process in a language class could be considered a painstaking process. An instructor plays a decisive role in determining how to evaluate the knowledge assumed by their students whose learning performance is highly influenced by assessment (Struyven et al., 2005), assessment being the methodological and ‘systematic process’ of collecting information ‘about student achievement’ (Dhindsa et al., 2007, p. 1261). The objective of the following assignment is to delineate assessment methods, to give an insight into a published test by analyzing the data gathered through testing and to produce a testing item which will be a useful tool for the instructor since it will cater for the needs of their students, thus rendering the assessment process a useful instrument for linguistic and communicative competence.

Rendering a straightforward introduction and an all-inclusive overview for anyone concerned with common assessment issues in pedagogy and applied linguistics, the seminal work of Anthony Green, Exploring Language Assessment and Testing, proves to be adequate for the purpose. The book designates its overriding focus on apprising its practitioners-"students embarking on Masters level or teacher education courses, as well as students in the closing stages of undergraduate study" (p. xv)-on the practice of language assessment and testing while not leaving behind the techniques of making for and improving good-quality assessments. The book is divided into three major parts; Part I focuses on the practice of language assessment which and includes four chapters. Chapters 5 and 6 in Part II concentrate on theoretical insights imparting the process described in part I. Part III of the book which incorporates the last chapter, i.e. chapter 7, maps out assessment trends in progress as well as controversies in the field.
English Language Assessment: Theory and Practice
Language testing at any level is a highly complex undertaking that must be based on theory as well as practice. A language assessment system focusing only on Reading and Writing is outmoded and need to be modified, especially in this electronic era when the oral skills are dominating other skills.This paper analyses various techniques employed in language testing and examines the guiding principles of assessment. It investigates the assessment systems followed at CBSE, SSC, ICSE, IGCSE and the undergraduate levels. It advocates the urgency of assessing all the four skills which will be beneficial for students of different levels of intelligence. The Four Skill Assessment and Alternative Assessments are suggested remedies for improving the standard of English amongst the students. When students learn English as a Second Language, they face various problems. These problems can be partially categorised as problems caused by mother tongue interference and partially those caused by the method of language teaching and assessment. The greatest curse of the modern educational system is the lack of harmony between what is taught and what is tested. Up-to-date methods are implemented, curriculum is innovated but the questions remain traditional to the core. Language is a very abstract phenomenon and that abstract nature of language makes it more complex. As we know that how much the thing will be abstract that much it will be complex for measurement so language is also abstract that is why it is complex for measurement. There are several issues which are faced in this broad field of language assessment. While highlighting all the challenges that were faced in the broad area of language assessment in the 21 st century, we know that many of these challenges are persisted since early years. As this field is becoming more advanced and more researches are being conducted in this field new challenges are also emerging in this field of language assessment, we are facing challenges in the educational, economic and social context of the 21 st century, it makes us sure that this field can be more vibrant and exciting for this who truly wants to work on it. We know that so many researches are conducted in this field and have addressed multiple numbers of issues and is also addressing the issues but still there are gaps and some questions which are waiting for to be answered by someone. Such as, the ability of language is of which nature? How can we be assured of the interpretations of those who are taking tests? To what degree we can assure the validity of assessment held for the specific purpose? Some new challenge have also aroused I this vast field of language assessment form increased universal demand for those people who possess a very good levels in language ability. These demands have two parts, one is the large number of those students whose first language is not used as their medium of instruction and they need to learn the standard or official language to become a functioning and beneficial members of their society, second part is globalization and emerging demands for those employees who can make themselves functioning in bilingual or multilingual workplaces. There is also one emerging demand in this field which is accountability of the language teachers in language teaching along with the increasing demand from the high level users of language. Government, from local schools to school districts to state and nation, is in need of such educational institutions and such teachers which should make themselves accountable for the levels of language ability attained by learners of languages, about the resources which are given to them of the money, time, space and human as well. And that government should demand from universities, colleges and schools to produce such employees whose language ability is polished and sufficient for them to perform their duties in bilingual or multilingual workplaces. Such demands of accountability will bolster the normal interest of teachers and schools and will provide the students with such instructions which will be in according and beneficial for boosting the learning of their students. In all such situations, the tools for collecting information that will inform us about decisions both accountability decisions and instructional decisions are language assessments. The increasing number of the language learners in schools is creating great challenges in high stake accountability assessment as well as for classroom language assessment. The challenge in classroom language assessment is that how we will practically use or apply the knowledge that we have learned. For that firstly, we will have to develop such kind of assessments which will fulfill the purposes of instruction and learning. Considerable changes in education at the European and Greek levels have shifted the interest from a teacher-orientated nature of learning, teaching and testing to a more learner-centered one, and brought evaluation and assessment into the focus of discussion about education, connecting in some cases teacher performance with students’ learning outcomes. Apart from school evaluation, which is being carried out in Greece in order to provide all stakeholders with information about its effectiveness, assessment is taking a different form in Senior High Schools by the use of a “bank” of examination tasks in an effort to ensure objectivity. This is the case for language learning, too, by adding different types of communicative tasks, such as multiple matching, multiple choice, cloze, etc., to assess vocabulary and grammar, and reading and writing. In this context, the present paper examines the outcomes of 1st-grade students at the 2nd Model Experimental Senior High School of Thessaloniki in the English language in a variety of task types, which serves a number of purposes: to make judgments about the learners’ level of skills and knowledge, to diagnose their strengths and weaknesses, and discuss the washforward effect of the outcomes on teaching and learning. The paper also makes (by the use of the SPSS program) a comparative analysis between the outcomes of all the aforementioned learners and those who participate in programs which demand the use of the English language in real world situations, supposing that exposure to real life situations increases the learners’ linguistic performance.
