Memorie mute. Egodocumenti come fonti per la storia del primo cinema italiano [2019]

L’avventura. International Journal of Italian Film and Media Landscapes, 2019

Silent Memories. Egodocuments as Sources for Early Italian Cinema History The written memories of authors, directors, actors, stars – published or not – are useful sources, that serve to clarify the obscure sides of cinema history. Autobiographies bring us to the middle of that world, re-constructed through the lens of the writers’ ego, demonstrating that some protagonists are a primary historic source. Frames of a past to which we do not belong rise through the words of memories. Interviews with the actors of silent cinema are just as useful, as they carry facts that only witnesses could know, despite the difficulties arising from dialogical structure of interviews that differentiate them from written memories. This study examines, in particular, Italian sources from the silent cinema period. Keywords: Memory, Egodocument, Source, History, Silent Cinema

Forma-canzone e audiovisivo: compilation soundtrack nel cinema di Nanni Moretti

L'avventura. International Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, 7, 2, pp. 241-256, 2021

Italian song stands out as a strategic, stylistic feature in Nanni Moretti’s film production. This article investigates the compilation soundtracks of his films from authorial, intertextual and contextual perspectives. It examines the ways songs affect creativity, intertextual and intermedial interactions, and the geometries and different performances used to reveal Moretti’s character-mask. Italian songs ultimately compose a cohesive songbook in Moretti’s filmography, in such a way that they not only reflect the development of his poetics, but also the history of listening practices: from the jukebox to the Instagram story

Ma i film sognano fidanzate automatiche? Tornatore, Ferraris e un'ipotesi sulla filosofia del cinema - «L'avventura International Journal of Italian Film and Media Landscapes» 1/2018

The relationship between film and philosophy has been a strong presence in theoretical debates since the 1950s. How can films as artefacts contribute to philosophical discourse? The aim of this paper is to explore the convergence between the recent works of a film director (Giuseppe Tornatore) and a philosopher (Maurizio Ferraris). Tornatore's "The Best Offer" is the story of a man who has feelings for female portraits as they were real women; Ferraris thinks that a work of art is a special kind of object that acts like a subject, whom he defines «The Automatic Girlfriend». "The Correspondence" is a romantic drama about a woman who keeps receiving messages, emails, packages from her lover, even after he has died; this issue is deeply connected with some aspects of the documentality theory put forward by Ferraris. The two films by Tornatore work as examples of Ferraris's philosophical questions, in a case of dialectical film philosophy.

Le cose belle: On the Aesthetics of Becoming in Documentary Films

L'avventura International Journal of Italian Film and Media Landscapes, 2018

Agostino Ferrente and Giovanni Piperno created the project "Intervista a mia madre" in 1999 for Italian public television. The success of the film and the personal and professional relationships established with the four characters (two twelve-year-old boys, Enzo Della Volpe e Fabio Rippa, and two fourteen-year-old girls, Adele Serra e Silvana Sorbetti) pushed the creators to return to the project ten years later. Though the filmmakers conceived "Le cose belle" as an independent documentary, they also treat it as a work in progress, recovering some sequences of unused shot of the previous films and adding some scenes after the presentation of the documentary. Inspired by the theories of «duration» of Bergson and their cinematic application by Deleuze, this article presents the genesis and the evolution of "Le cose belle" as an emblematic case of Italian documentary production in the last decade. It investigates in particular the concept of a «becoming» art piece, through an analysis of the documentary's structure.

Da health resorts a salons d’Europe. Sociabilità culturale e turismo d’élite in Liguria nel secondo Ottocento

From health resorts to salons d’Europe. Cultural sociability and elite tourism in Liguria in the second half of the 19th century This article examines the transformations of tourist places due to the changes occurred in elite tourism during the second half of the 19th century. It focuses on Liguria, the well-known Italian Riviera, which, during the 19th century, emerged as a leading tourist region in Europe. In particular it sheds light on the construction of the image of fashionable resorts, by examining the role played by three factors: places for social relations (grand hotels, kursaals, etc.), entertainments and social events (such as Carnival), and specialized magazines aimed at tourists, the so called journal mondain. It analyses how these elements interact with each other and argues that all of them were crucial in determining the success of the most important Ligurian resorts on the international tourist market.
