Transformations and Transitions. In: “Beyond History and Identity. New Perspectives on Aesthetics, Politics, and Society in Eastern Europe.” Winteracademy des Forums Transregionale Studien. Berlin, 08.12.2015. (original) (raw)

Abstract

Economic changes in the last two decades certainly had a significant impact on the social, political, and cultural landscapes of Eastern Europe. A discourse of transition and economic correctness shaped these developments. Not specified in further detail, ominous Western standards were set as objectives. Difficulties in meeting economic expectations often led to a revaluation of individual national approaches. Thus, economic structural dynamics prove to be of pivotal importance when discussing rhetorics of history and identity. The thematic session offers a discussion of classic and recent texts on the interdependence of cultural and economic developments. Rather then focussing on economics and statistical data, most of the texts will centre around terminological, conceptual, and cultural issues with regard to neoliberalism, transition, etc. and their post-socialist legacies.
