The Importance of Rural Tourism: Rural Tourism Practices in the World and in Turkey

There have been several changes observed in tourism sector as in many sectors due to the globalization in recent years. With these changes, a trend towards alternative tourism types has begun in line with rapid alteration in tourism demand. New tourism types such as heritage, trekking, eco tourism, agritourism, cultural tourism and rural tourism come into the picture with the increase in tourism demand. One of the alternative tourism types, rural tourism is applied by regions and countries where rural areas are plentiful, with the aim of providing rural development with new tourism policies produced in accordance with tourism demand. This study presents rural development applications in the world and in Turkey performed via rural tourism. Bu değişimlere bağlı olarak, başta turizm talebinde meydana gelen hızlı değişim doğrultusunda alternatif turizm türlerine eğilim başlamıştır. Burada turizm talebine bağlı olarak; tarih, doğa yürüyüşü, eko turizm, agro turizm, kültür ve kırsal turizm türleri ortaya çıkmaktadır. Alternatif turizm türlerinden biri olan kırsal turizm kırsal alanların yoğun olduğu yöreler, bölgeler ve ülkeler tarafından ulusal ve uluslararası turizm talebine bağlı olarak geliştirilen yeni turizm politikalarıyla kırsal kalkınmayı sağlamak amacıyla uygulanmaktadır. Bu çalışmada hem dünyada hem de Türkiye'de kırsal turizme bağlı olarak gerçekleştirilen kırsal kalkınma uygulamalarına yer verilmektedir. Rural tourism extension for community development and Turkey

Turkey has very important potential for rural tourism according to agricultural and geographical regions. Rural tourism also covers human and environmental resources, and therefore focuses on people and the environment and community development. Rural extension is aimed to raise the living standard of the rural families in all rural areas and there is close relation between rural tourism and rural extension. Rural tourism presents very important opportunities as an alternative income source for the rural family and rural community development. Tourism is recognized as travel that people do out of their regular environment for periods of time less than 12 months, for pleasure, business or other aims. In the paper, it is discussed impacts and roles of rural extension on the development of rural tourism in rural areas, and relations among extension, agriculture, nature, tourism and rural economy and people etc. Especially there is big potential for domestic tourists in the middle period and also for international tourists in the long period. Generally roles and impacts of the extension for rural tourism development in Turkey were investigated.

Rural Tourism Contributions to Rural Development in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey

Rural tourism is considered as one of the essential elements making significant contributions to rural development in many developing countries. A well planned and adequately operated rural tourism sector provides job opportunities for local people, increases living standards, alleviates poverty, prevents migration, and ultimately makes it possible for rural people to enjoy living at their original places of residencies. IMPORTANCE OF RURAL TOURISM AND INVESTIGATION OF ABROAD EXAMPLES

Urbanization, one of the biggest problems in 21st century, causes many environment problems such as structure areas and population increase. The decline of urban green spaces and environmental problems in cities have made rural life and rural values again important in recent years. In this context, the concept of rural tourism, which emerges as a kind of alternative tourism in line with the changing income levels, needs and wants of the people covering the whole of the tourism activities in the rural areas, is getting more and more important day by day. Rural tourism, which enables rural areas to develop socio-culturally and economically, also offers tourists the chance to get in touch with natural beauties and meet local cultural characteristics. Turkey has a high potential for rural tourism, which plays an important role in preserving natural and cultural heritage as well as providing local sustainable development. In order for this potential to have a significant share in the development of Turkey, the right perception and development of the concept of rural tourism must be planned correctly. With this study, the importance of rural tourism will be emphasized and suggestions will be developed for our country by giving examples of rural tourism from Australia, South Africa and Turkey. Promotion of Rural Tourism in Turkey Within The Scope of European Union Policies

Concept of rural tourism has recently become prominent in our country and European Union member states. With a decision to promote rural development, union started to allocate funds to the rural tourism policies. Various projects are developed in the EU countries and practices of benefiting from these grant funds and supporting the rural tourism destinations have started to gain success. In this regard, concept of rural tourism was mentioned in the study, EU rural tourism policies and contents of these policies were addressed, then rural tourism practices of some EU member states were mentioned. Successful projects were given as examples within the scope of EU rural tourism and finally, recommendations were presented as regards to what should be done in Turkey by talking about promotion of rural tourism in Turkey within the scope of EU policies and the samples.

Rural tourism plays an important social and developmental role through the provision of additional income, especially in mountainous and disadvantaged areas. It contributes to the development and revitalization of rural areas, while strengthening the protection of natural resources. Consequently, in the last decades there has been much research examining the phenomenon of rural tourism, the problems faced by rural tourism businesses, etc. Although, there have been too many studies on rural tourism, they have not examined the progress of rural tourism research. Very little analysis has been conducted on the content of articles that examine this important area. The purpose of this study is to determine the progress in rural tourism research up to date by using content analysis technique on published articles in the most significant academic journals, with the aim of identifying focus areas and providing future research directions.

Forward: New Directions in Rural Tourism

Rural tourism seems to be an appropriate tool to revitalize the reclining rural areas and to ensure their sustainable future by job retention or even job creation, farm support, broadened cultural provision, landscape and nature conservation or the maintenance of rural arts and crafts as attractions for tourists. Rural tourism often provides an incentive for infrastructural development, which then contributes to the growth of other economic activities in the rural areas. It is Important to note that, the growing number of tourists involved in rural tourism and related activities helped the development of many rural settlements, without being limited to areas with high tourism potential and an exceptional attractiveness. The way in which rural tourism is organized and the forms it takes vary from country to country. In some countries, the government or cooperative movement is the main source of investment, while in others it is a private enterprise.

Tourism has been an important human activity since time immemorial.
