Plates and shells are significant structural components in many engineering and industrial applications. In this study, the free vibration analysis of annular plates is investigated. To this aim, two different numerical methods including the differential quadrature and the discrete singular convolution methods are performedfor numerical simulations. Moreover, the Frequency values are obtained via these two methods and finally, the performance of these methods is investigated.
Free vibration analysis of rotating cylindrical shells using discrete singular convolution technique
International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, 2009
Free vibration analysis of rotating cylindrical shells is presented. Discrete singular convolution (DSC) method has been proposed for numerical solution of vibration problem. The formulations are based on Love's first approximation shell theory, and include the effects of initial hoop tension and centrifugal and Coriolis accelerations due to rotation. Frequencies are obtained for different types of boundary conditions and geometric parameters. In general, close agreement between the obtained results and those of other researchers has been found.
Exact Finite Element for Torsional Vibration of Shafts under Harmonic Torsion
International journal of engineering research and technology, 2016
The present paper investigate the dynamic analysis for the torsional vibration of shafts subjected to various harmonic twisting moments. The governing torsional vibration equation and related boundary conditions for the shafts are derived using Hamilton’s variational principle. The exact closed-form solutions for the shafts having a cantilevered and simply supported boundary conditions and under various harmonic torsional loads are determined. The closed form solution is consequently used to develop a family of exact shape functions which exactly satisfy the exact homogeneous solution of the governing torsional equation. A super-convergent two-noded finite beam element is then formulated based on the exact shape functions. The proposed beam element developed involves no special discretization errors normally encountered in conventional finite element formulations and provide results in excellent agreement with a minimal number of degrees of freedom. The present solutions are shown t...

In the present study, free vibration, deflection and buckling analyses of rectangular composite plates via discrete singular convolution has been presented. In the proposed approach, the derivatives in both the governing equations and the boundary conditions are discretized by the method of DSC. The obtained results are compared with those of other numerical methods available in the literature. Numerical calculations showed that accurate results can be achieved. It has been also shown that the DSC method yields efficient and convergence solutions and these results are in excellent agreement with the analytical solutions and other sources of numerical solutions.
Free vibration analysis of lateral carrying load systems with opening by a new algorithm
In this study, the free vibration analysis of lateral carrying load systems with openings (coupled shear walls) is presented by the use of discrete singular convolution (DSC). Discrete singular convolution is a relatively new numerical method which is very powerful in vibration analyses. Much research on how to apply complex boundary conditions in the analysis is carried out using this method and various solutions have been proposed. Applying the boundary conditions in the governing equations of lateral carrying load systems is a challenging issue. This paper proposes a new algorithm for applying the boundary conditions in the vibration analysis of coupled shear walls using the DSC method. To evaluate the proposed approach, several samples were analyzed. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, the obtained results were compared with the values of the differential quadrature method (DQ) and finite element (FE). Strict conformity of the results of the proposed method shows the effectiveness and capability of the numerical solution in vibration analysis of coupled shear walls with openning.
Applied Mathematical Modelling, 2018
The behaviour of plates resting on elastic foundations has wide interest because it is an important model for many engineering applications. Natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are guides to investigating the behaviour of a soil-structure system with time. Therefore, free vibration analysis constitutes a considerable part of research done on this topic. In this study, the effects of the stiffness of a surrounding Modified Vlasov soil type, the soil depth, and the aspect ratio on the free vibration of a thin rectangular dowelled plate on the Modified Vlasov soil type are investigated. We used a discrete singular convolution (DSC) with a Taylor series expansion method to apply the boundary conditions. The two formulas of the Taylor series expansion are used in the DSC to eliminate the fictitious points outside the physical domain. It is noticed that beyond a certain depth, neither the effective depth of the soil nor the, frequency varies consistently. Furthermore, the dynamically activated depth influences the frequency values for plates more than for beams. In addition, the effect of the elastic rotational stiffness of the surrounding soil is found to be negligible compared to that of the elastic vertical translational one. The results obtained can serve as a basis for the dynamic analysis of rigid pavements.

Free vibration analysis of laminated composite and functionally graded materials (FGM) composite annular plates is investigated. The equations of motion of annular plates have been obtained via conical shell equations. Shear deformation theory is used for shell equation of motion. After the implementation of the Regularized Shannon delta (RSD) kernel and Lagrange delta sequence (LDS) kernel, the method of discrete singular convolution (DSC) is used for numerical solution of the governing equations to obtain the frequency values. To verify the accuracy of this method, comparisons of the present results are made with results available in the open literature. Some parametric results for annular plates and conical panels have depicted for isotropic, laminated composite and functionally graded composite materials. It is found that the convergence and accuracy of the present DSC method is very good for vibration problem of annular plates with functionally graded materials (FMG) and laminated composite cases. Some results about carbon nanotube reinforced (CNTR) composite plate have also been approved.
Comparative study of vibration analysis in rotary shafts between Rayleigh's and Dunkerley's methods
Al-Khwarizmi Engineering Journal
The importance of vibrations in rotating rotors in engineering applications has been examined, as has the best approach to interpreting vibration data. The most extensively used analytical approaches for rotating shaft vibration analysis have been investigated. In this research, a detailed study was made of the Rayleigh and Dunkerley methods due to their importance in the special calculations to find the amplitude of vibrations in the rotation system. The multi-node method was used to calculate both Dunkerley's and Rayleigh's methods. An experimental platform was built to study the vibrations that occur in the rotating shafts, and the results were compared with theoretical calculations and with different distances of the bearings. It proved that there is very little error between the experimental and theoretical results. The vibration signal from the sensors was analyzed using the LABVIEW program. Rayleigh's method was compared to the exact method, and it was considered ...
On the displacement formulation of torsion of shafts with rectangular cross-sections
International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1982
The use of warping displacement functions for the torsional stiffness representation of beams with rectangular cross-sections is studied. These functions can directly be employed in the displacementlbased formulation of Hermitian and isoparametric three-dimensional beam elements for linear, elastic-plastic or large displacement/large rotation analysis. The results of some studies are given to demonstrate the applicability and use of the proposed functions.
Drillstring vibration analysis using differential quadrature method
Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2010
In this study, the differential quadrature method (DQM) is applied to analyze the drillstring vibrations in a near vertical hole. First, a nonlinear static analysis is performed to find the effective length of the string where it rests on the borehole wall. The exact form of the beam curvature is used to formulate the string. To model the contact between different parts of the drillstring and the borehole wall, the formation is modeled by a series of springs placed through its length. Then the DQM is applied to the nonlinear differential equations of drillstring sections and those defining the edge and interface boundary conditions. The Newton-Raphson algorithm is used to solve the system of nonlinear equations. Next a free vibration analysis is carried out to determine the natural frequencies of the drillstring. Using effective length derived from static analysis, free vibration analysis is performed to find the lateral natural frequencies of the drillstring, while the full length of the string is used to compute its axial and torsional natural frequencies. The numerical results obtained from a series of case studies confirm the efficiency and accuracy of the method in dealing with drillstring vibration problems.
