Web-Based Language Learning Materials: A Challenge
Internet Journal of e-Language Learning & Teaching, 2004
Many English teachers fear of programming when they are asked to develop computer-based language learning materials for their courses. Some are reluctant, while others are willing to take the challenge. However, with the availability of authoring systems, which offers user-friendly features and shortcuts, language teachers can now develop web-based Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) materials that fulfill pedagogical principles and instructional design principles. This article describes the development of web-based programming activities among in-service language teachers who enroll in English Language Studies program at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for the past four years. Currently, these in-service teachers have developed more than 60 web-based English language programs, and most of these programs are now available in the Internet for review and evaluation. This article will also present findings from a trace study that looks into post-coursework activities among these in-service teachers in their teaching profession.

Web-based English Language Learning: A Review from Web 1.0 to Web 3.0
Pakistan Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Since the internet network's establishment, the World Wide Web is considered as the most important tool used by billions of people across the world. It allows people to share the media, read, write, publish and interact with others via the internet. Since its advent, the World Wide Web has evolved from a read-only medium technological network to the collaborative one where learners are interlinked in various ways. Through its various stages of evolution, English language learning was transformed from simple to an interactive, collaborative, and learner-centered environment. This paper will present the conceptual review of the literature, in chronological order, on how English language learning has evolved over the past years, particularly from web 1.0 to web 3.0. It also aims to present the analysis of the evolution of the World Wide Web (www) technologies from a learner perspective; therefore, it will elucidate various web-based tools, technologies, trends, and applications use...
Web-based applications in higher education: revolutionising language learning in the digital age Aplicaciones basadas en la web en la educación superior: Revolucionando el aprendizaje de idiomas en la era digital, 2024
Описание This research article aimed to examine the utilisation of web applications in higher education, specifically focusing on their presentation and usage. Methodology: a mixed approach was used in the study. The results showed that by analysing how these applications are used and discussing user perspectives, the study shed light on the interplay between technical functionality and social engagement in information and communication technologies. Students in higher education view educational web applications as supplementary resources, utilising them for tasks such as translation and pronunciation practice. It can be concluded that the active and productive use of educational mobile applications by students in Ukraine has notably increased, particularly in the context of war. The key benefits reported by students included the accessibility and convenience of web-based educational tools. These applications serve as both learning aids and motivational tools, addressing challenges such as remote learning and limited English-language materials. The widespread use of web applications during times of war has proven instrumental in maintaining educational access and quality in Ukraine.
WEB-BASED LANGUAGE LEARNING: AUTHORING AND ASSESSMENT TECHNOLOGIES
Using up-to-date web technology we designed 13 language activity templates using XML. On the authoring side, for each activity type, we created an easy-to-use web interface to XML templates allowing teachers to create language exercises online easily. The interfaces create the XML code for the given exercise and an on-line parser transforms the XML specification into a dynamic HTML page inserting all the necessary scripts, objects, images and links for the selected exercise type. The final page is ready to be saved, enriched with audio/video samples and inserted into a module/course using the support provided. We also make provisions for language skill assessment (placement test or final academic test), designing a system for writing, administering and making reports on tests for thousands of students in a secure and efficient way. The tests use a similar schema for all the available languages, for the assessment of grammar skills, reading skills and listening/comprehension skills.
Language learning and technology - Student activities in web-based environments
The impact of the web as a communicative arena, based on the use of social software, has changed conditions for communication on all levels of society; privately, at work and in education. This has opened up for multicultural communication, frequently with English as the lingua franca. Exploring how the web and web-based technologies afford learning activities is something that is related to practical and theoretical interests in the field of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). These interests are also the foundation for this thesis. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of how web-based environments can change the conditions for language learning. Within a socio-cultural framework, the thesis explores activities and student interaction in web-based learning environments in language learning for engineering students in higher education in Sweden. The main research question is how web-based language learning activities contribute to the development of language compete...
There is ample evidence that a shift towards more integration of web 2.0 in education is taking place. Surveys indicate that a growing number of schools in primary, secondary and higher education have access to web 2.0 tools, although how they are used to technologically-enhance the language learning process is a question that needs to be addressed. Quite often discussion of integration of technology focuses on specific practices, rather than considering the importance for teachers to critically assess the potential that technology holds for them to improve and innovate the language learning process of their pupils in a way that adjusts to emergent understandings of knowledge construction. This chapter aims to open the debate on how language teaching approaches can really integrate technology and language learning as part of a continual social process of shared knowledge-building and communication and one which adapts to the needs of future generations.
