The Impact of Digital Architecture on Freehand Sketches Through Design Process
2014
ﺔﻴﻤﻴﻤﺼﺘﻟا ﺔﻴﻠﻤﻌﻟا مﺪﺨﻳ ﺎﻤﺑو ﻢﻬﻨﻣ . Since the emergence of computer and its different applications to architecture fields and the design process specifically, it made a clear impact on changing the ways of expressing architectural ideas of the architectural designer - student or architect - and utilizing the new design tools. This paper introduces a view on the role of freehand sketches versus computer applications in design process and analysis of pioneering architects' works, searching for the most appropriate method, which represents the use of all methods' features and incorporates it through the design stages so as to the utilization of freehand sketches or computer applications and can be use in the appropriate stage of each one and in a manner that can serving the design process. This paper recommended that the architects, architectural educators and students have recently merged the two methods to take advantage of all features, avoid the disadvantages, use of sketche...

In the architectural design, designers are focused on the early stages of the design process or conceptual design. The ultimate goal of this stage is to find a solution for an existing problem, investigate design space, or explore an idea. This stage conventionally begins with sketches and diagrams to explore ideas and solutions; the ambiguity and vagueness of conventional freehand sketching can be a source of creativity. Nowadays, with the advances in digital technology, there are attempts to integrate digital tools into the conceptual design in order to construct a digital design medium in the architectural education. Recent developments in CAAD software shows a shift in focus toward conceptual design interface; but these tools have not developed and still fail to offer an appropriate design environment for sketching; So application of digital tools in the early stages of design, has created problems and challenges especially regarding creativity. The problem is that why digital s...

In architectural design process, designers do sketches to tell what they think about and to improve these ideas. Sketches are important for design process, not for only being a communication tool that tells designers thoughts but also they engage in an interaction by introducing new ideas and developing them. In this context, sketch is not possible to separate from the design process. Designing process continue as long as the act of making sketches which is the visualization tool of continuing ideas. With the advancement of technology it has become part of computer design process and sketches in digital environment work has begun. Today's situation is, programs have been developed that provide the opportunity to sketch using computer and has now become a reality that cannot be ignored from the two different environments for the design process. This study will focus on to sketch in architectural design studio and drawing approaches in digital environment. In this context, this study will examine the design process, the role of the sketches in this process, sketch approaches on computer, and developments in these matters.

Digital Design - Experiment in Contemporary Architecture
Conference: International Conference on Architectural Research - ICAR 2012Volume: Proceedings - ICAR 2012, 2012
The unprecedented contemporary expansion of knowledge brought forward a requirement to adopt a new mentality and a sense of urgency in bridging disciplines which, by the middle of twentieth century, gave rise to multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity. Mankind has always used intelligence to address problems that life and society have generated. The same planet with the same resources needed to support the life of an exponentially growing population. In response to these requirements, the science and the technology have also grown exponentially, giving rise to cybernetics, mathematical theories that aim to translate the nature at macro and microscopic levels and theories that had the potential of being useful in generating new solutions in architecture. The emergence of computers, of digital technology, of complex graphics and visualization techniques streamlined the approach to architectural solutions and proved useful in satisfying both the pragmatic constraints that make architecture a science and the features that make it an art. This paper investigates the design of digital processes and how they can improve the thinking process at the project concept stage and the rethinking of the relationship between architecture, sciences and, inevitably, a highly technological society. Also present is a sub textual issue as to what extent these current trends are found in Romanian schools of architecture.
What is Architectural Digital Sketch? - A systematic inventory
Proceedings of the 39th International Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe), 2021
The traditional sketch using pencil and paper is an indispensable medium for architects. Digital technology both imitates and extends the possibilities of the sketch into a new form, the Architectural Digital Sketch. In this paper, we present a descriptive framework from the theoretical perspective of technology parameters. This framework covers traditional and digital sketches. We investigated several representative tools for sketching employing the framework, such as traditional sketch, Wacom SmartPen, iPad Pro, Foldable Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad X1 and Hyve3D. We demonstrate how the framework gives a unified approach to such widely varied tools.
The Emergence and Impending of Digital Design in Architecture
2013
The paper introduces and discusses current developments in architectural discourse, design theory, digital design models, techniques and their relations to design pedagogy. The evolution of design knowledge in architectural theory and praxis is explicated and its implications for required changes in design education are presented. The theoretical influence of architectural concepts is presented through historical references in digital architecture. This structure of design concepts is proposed as a medium of design education. An experimental design studio on: „Design as research: the exploration of digital architectural concepts‟ is presented as a pedagogical framework for educating the digital architect and a series of research and design programs carried out in an experimental design studio demonstrates this framework. Digital architectures are profoundly changing the processes of design and construction. By integrating design, analysis, manufacture and assembly of buildings aroun...
The use of computer tools in architectural practice has been steadily increasing in recent years. Many architectural offices are already using computer tools, mostly for production tasks. Hardly any design is being done with the computer. With the new computer tools, architects are confronted with the challenge to use computers to express their design ideas right from conception. This paper describes a project made for a competition which recently took place in Spain. Sketches and computer models were the only tools used in designing this project. A variety of computer tools were used in different stages of this project: two dimensional drawing tools were used in the early stages, then a three-dimensional modeling program for the development of the design and for the production of final drawings, and a rendering program for final presentation images.
