A Journey Through Qualitative Research From Design to Reporting (original) (raw)

Planning Qualitative Research: Design and Decision Making for New Researchers

International Journal of Qualitative Methods, 2020

For students and novice researchers, the choice of qualitative approach and subsequent alignment among problems, research questions, data collection, and data analysis can be particularly tricky. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide a concise explanation of four common qualitative approaches, case study, ethnography, narrative, and phenomenology, demonstrating how each approach is linked to specific types of data collection and analysis. We first introduce a summary and key qualities of each approach. Then, using two common research contexts, we apply each approach to design a study, enabling comparisons among approaches and demonstrating the internal consistency within each approach. Given the nuance and complexity of qualitative research, this paper provides an accessible starting point from which novice researchers can begin their journey of learning about, designing, and conducting qualitative research.

A practical guide through qualitative analysis

INTRODUCING QUALITATIVE METHODS provides a series of volumes which introduce qualitative research to the student and beginning researcher. The approach is interdisciplinary and international. A distinctive feature of these volumes is the helpful student exercises. One stream of the series prov1des texts on the key methodologies used in qualitative research. The other stream contains books on qualitative research for different disciplines or occupations. Both streams cover the basic literature in a clear and accessible style, but also cover the 'cutting edge' 1ssues in the area.

A Critical Review of Qualitative Research Methods: Collecting Evidence, Crafting Analysis, Communicating Impact

Book Review, 2022

In this article, we examine Sarah J. Tracy's (2013) book Qualitative Research Methods: Collecting Evidence, Crafting Analysis, Communicating Impact, and First Edition. Typically, we carefully read the texts we are reviewing to make sure we don't misunderstand them and underline any portions we feel are particularly important. Next, we begin by describing the subject matter and target audience of the book (since having this information first may allow readers who are not interested to skip the rest of the review, and readers who are interested to raise their attention). Next, we describe the topic's development in terms of its depth of treatment and various content-related aspects. Then we highlight the aspects of the book that, in our opinion, have strengths and shortcomings. We attempt to provide a broad assessment of the book's value and potential use. In the end, we aim to make the form as long as necessary and polish it. We discovered that the Sarah J. Tracy book was beneficial for both beginners and seasoned scholars. Since the author has extensive experience with qualitative research, their publication may present a chance to advance our comprehension of qualitative research design. Furthermore, the book contains a complete, step-by-step explanation of the methodology for evaluating qualitative quality as well as how to gather, examine, and write qualitative data. It is a complete resource for the theoretical foundations and practical application of technique and it is meant to provide graduate students and advanced academics with enough methodological material to be relevant.

The Qualitative Report The What' s and Why' s of The How To of Qualitative Research

The book provides an excellent guide for those wishing to conduct qualitative research, whether new or experienced scholars. It links theoretical foundations with practical tools, including examples that illustrate how to bridge the gap between theorizing and conducting real-life qualitative research in the field. It shows how to design and craft the qualitative research in the field using different research tools (e.g., interviews, observations etc.) and how to analyze the data and compose a qualitative draft. In short, it answers the "what," "why," and "how" of qualitative research.

Eleven Pitfalls in Qualitative Research: Some Perils Every Emerging Scholar and Doctoral Student Should Be Aware Of!

The Qualitative Report, 2021

The current article analyzes potential pitfalls that each emergent researcher might face during the qualitative research process and illuminates adequate strategies to cope with them effectively. The author's personal and professional experience in supervising doctoral and MA students in their qualitative research and students' own reflections on the pitfalls they have faced are used as resources for this paper. Eleven pitfalls are depicted in this paper, divided into four phases in the research process, beginning from the preparatory phase in which the researcher plans the research program, through data collection and analysis, to the final phase of writing the research report. The paper provides some practical strategies to cope with these pitfalls successfully and effectively.

Successful Qualitative Research: A practical guide for beginners

What do I need to become a good qualitative researcher? Why we love qualitative research Our approach in this book We're about to introduce you to the wonderful world of qualitative research! It's vast and exciting, full of new areas to discover. We hope you'll learn to love and feel as passionate about it as we do. As we know that won't be the case for everyone, we want you to feel that you really 'get' it: that you understand both the purpose and premise of qualitative research, and, crucially, that you know how to actually go about doing a qualitative research project. In order for this to happen, you may need to put aside ideas you have about what research is, and approach this field with 'open eyes'-like an explorer who can only understand a completely different culture if they don't view and judge it by the perspectives and values of their own culture. What is qualitative research? The most basic definition of qualitative research is that it uses words as data (see Chapter 2), collected and analysed in all sorts of ways. Quantitative research, in contrast, uses numbers as data and analyses them using statistical techniques. The term qualitative research is used to refer both to techniques (of data collection or data analysis) and to a wider framework for conducting research, or paradigm. Paradigm here refers to the beliefs, assumptions, values and practices shared by a research community (see Kuhn, 1962), and it provides an overarching framework for research. Qualitative research, as we define it, is not just about data and techniques-it's about the application of qualitative techniques within a qualitative paradigm, which is quite different from a quantitative paradigm (see Box 1.1). It has been referred to as Big Q qualitative research, and contrasted with small q qualitative research (Kidder & Fine, 1987), which is the use of specific qualitative data collection and techniques, not (necessarily) within a qualitative paradigm (see Box 1.2).

A Front-to-Back Guide to Writing a Qualitative Research Article

Qualitative Market Research, 2016

Purpose: This paper offers junior scholars a front-to-back guide to writing an academic, theoretically positioned, qualitative research article in the social sciences. Approach: The paper draws on formal (published) advice from books and articles as well as informal (word-of-mouth) advice from senior scholars. Findings: Most qualitative research articles can be divided into four major parts: the frontend, the methods, the findings, and the backend. This paper offers step-by-step instructions for writing each of these four parts. Value: Much of the advice in this paper is taken-for-granted wisdom among senior scholars. This article makes such wisdom available to junior scholars in a concise guide.
