Engineering profession in the next two decades will undergo dramatic changes, driven by not only technological developments but also societal transformation. Besides increased globalization, more acute concern for environment for sustainable development, will characterize changes and challenges for future engineers in their roles. As industry increasingly looks at Corporate Social Responsibility, not just as mandatory but as key to success, future engineers should change their mind sets and incorporate sustainability and corporate social responsibility as key parameters in their day-today working as well as decision making framework. As roles for future engineers expect different competencies from the graduating engineers, it is the responsibility of future engineering education to reinvent itself and brace itself for a paradigm shift in the way, students are groomed to match the changed expectations. Consequently, the way the components of education namely, knowledge, skills and attitude and values, are to be imparted has to be different. Contents, as well as pedagogy, will need to be changed accordingly. This tectonic shift will pose challenges to all the stake holders, educational institutions, government, teachers and students. Each one of them, needs to gear up itself to address the challenges. It also calls for change in mindsets so that the transition is smooth and successful. Concerted and synergistic efforts from all of them will help in engineering the future of engineering education with a strong and resilient foundation.

An Insight into Viable Engineering Education and Social Responsibility towards Sustainable Development

Nowadays environmental footprints are talks of the town. Few developed countries are trying to avoid their responsibilities while teaching lessons of sustainable development to developing and underdeveloped countries. In this entire context, it is important to teach the importance of sustainable development to students. Also the viability of engineering education from industrial requirement point of view needs to be assessed. There is need to have education system for engineering students which can encourage students for developing conception and visualization. Alignment between classroom teaching and actual practice is most important aspect.

Strategies for Promoting Globally Competitive Engineering Education in India

In the last ten years, there is a growing chorus of discontent about what is not happening in engineering education in India. Around 5 % of engineering graduates possess the required industry-relevant skills and competencies. All over the world, major efforts are being undertaken to transform engineering education. Based on the research, it is suggested to improve the performance of the faculty members, and their abilities to undertake the globalization of engineering education and digitalization. Further, there is a need for improving faculty development through flexible and blended programs under NITTTRs, NITs, State Technical Universities, modernization of curricula and instructional design, and collaboration with the industry and government. The colleges are to network with well-performing global universities and collaborate in research and development. There is an urgent need for improving Institute-Industry-Government-Partnership for improving the curriculum, research methods, and product innovation. The institutes can review their curriculum through the Faculty- Alumni-Industry-Representatives of Entrepreneurs (FAIR) Committee once a year and make improvements. Engineering students are to be exposed to the problems of industries and they are to be coached to solve them. Their research work and dissertations have to be industry-relevant. Further, the engineering institutes have to plan innovative products as a part of the capstone projects. Ultimately the Indian engineering education has to develop an industry-relevant competency model which will focus on industry-relevant skills and competencies.

Technical Education system is dynamic in nature. It faces many hurdles in response to societal, technological and economic changes in the environment both home and foreign. The debate today is not only about the value and role of Technical education in the social and economic development of a nation but has a broader aspect. Technical education is widely recognized as a vital part of the total education and training system. The real challenge is how to reposition it by shifting towards a developmental paradigm that holds sustainability as its core. It is hoped that this paper will provide a definite idea on technical education and its importance and some useful insights on the underlying meaning, policies and choices which may help to shape the systems of technical education and training further.

The field of engineering is changing rapidly as the growing global population puts added demands on the earth's resources: engineering decisions must now account for limitations in materials and energy as well as the need to reduce discharges of wastes. This means educators must revise courses and curricula so engineering graduates are prepared for the new challenges as practicing engineers.
