A propósito de tambuladeiras... (original) (raw)

At the beginning of the twentieth century, when the first Paulista inventories of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries began to be transcribed and published, some archaic words came to light whose meaning had long been forgotten. Belmonte (Benedito Carneiro Bastos Barreto, 1895-1947), historian, draftsman, researcher of the material history of the bandeirista era, came across one of these unfamiliar words - tamboladeira - and in the middle of the last century tried to unveil the meaning. The result of the research was only included in his book In the time of the bandeirantes (1939) after it had been revised and enlarged (c.1948), because at the time of the launch of the work the author had not yet solved the question. He was quite proud of his study, for he had finally recovered the memory of an object that seemed hopelessly lost. Unfortunately, he was mistaken. After all, what are tamboladeiras?
