Two forums were organized in order to confirm the established tradition in the frameworks of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Student Cave Club “Academic” – Sofia, and later – the 80th jubilee of the Bulgarian Federation of Speleology. The first one – the conference „Exploration and Protection of Karst and Caves” took place on 24 October 2008, where were presented 12 reports from 22 authors with various subjects. One of the numerous events, which the Bulgarian Federation of Speleology dedicated to its 80th anniversary, is the jubilee symposium „80 Years Organized Speleology in Bulgaria“. It took place on 22 March 2009. Related events, organized by BFS are the official meeting, exhibitions, National Cave Assembly, expeditions, etc. The host of the both events was the National Museum “The Earth and Man” – a place, which owing to its director Ass. Prof. Dr. Michail Maleev was turned into a national centre of the Bulgarian cavers and speleologists. In advance participation in the symposium declared 22 authors with 15 reports in the sphere of history of speleology, karst researches in Bulgaria (including mineralogy, hydrogeology and dive work, geology, climatology, as well as informatics, history, archaeology and archaeo-astronomy, rational use and research of regions in and outside the country. In the spirit of the established cooperation in the frameworks of the speleological society, we took the decision to publish the materials from the two scientific forums in one inner book, entitled “Symposium 80 Years Organized Speleology in Bulgaria“, divided into two parts: Materials from the jubilee „80 Years Organized Speleology in Bulgaria“ as well as materials from the conference „Exploration and Protection of the Karst and Caves”. We are convinced that this edition would contribute to the enlargement of the book heritage of the speleology in our country. We hope that the edition would be of use not only to cavers and speleologists but also to larger range of readers, who are interested in the caves and caving.
Stable isotope investigations on speleothems from different cave systems in Germany

22 to 2 cal. ka B.P "Hauptverband deutscher Höhlenforscher" (1922-45) and the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Karstforschung" (1945-50). The objectives are "to survey and protect the caves and karst-phenomena in Germany as well as the protection of the environment and the natural monuments in the karst regions of Germany" (http://hfc-hersfeld.de/vdhk.html). Today, "speleology" comprises all aspects of cave science as shown in figure P-1. Consequently, the term is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as the "scientific study of caves".
Biospeleological activities in Central Europe – a status report

and Saarland), and Luxembourg are available. Several activities deal with public relations, education, and training: the cave animal of the year, a camp for young cavers, the day nature, and the biospeleological workgroup. The German Barcoding of Life is a project which aims to obtain CO1 barcodes from every species in Germany with a sub-project on cave fauna. Special projects deal with Bythiospeum, niphargids, diplurans, sphaerocerids, and the biodiversity and ecology of cave invertebrates in the Central European Uplands.
Caves of the Low Tatras National Park and Its Neighbourhood as Objects of Speleotourism
Acta Montanistica Slovaca, 2021
Publicly accessible caves are important objects of the modern form of tourism, which is called speleotourism. The caves are important underground geolocalities, which are characterized by a high accumulation of visitors in a specific natural environment. They are usually part of large protected areas - national parks and protected landscape areas. The study deals with accessible caves in the Low Tatras National Park in the central part of Slovakia. In the national park, or rather in its vicinity, there are four caves formed in the carbonate rocks of the geological core of the Low Tatras mountains. In the first part of the study, we presented their basic geographical characteristics in terms of their description as underground geolocalities. The main aim of the study is to analyze the number of visitors to the Demänovská Cave of Freedom, Demänovská Ice Cave, located directly in the national park, Bystrianska Cave located in the buffer zone of the national park and Važecká Cave, locat...
The Svarthamar cave research project, Fauske, north Norway
speleo.no
The Svarthamar project was launched in 2003, aiming at a complete survey and speleogenetic analysis of caves within the 'Mefjell massif'. One of the caves, Svarthamarhola, is an anomalously huge cave room, the biggest in Scandinavia, containing a large ice mass which was formed since 1200 AD. Three MSc. projects (2005) were initiated in order to study cave microclimate, ice stratigraphy and speleothem stratigraphy. So far, accurate mapping of Svarthamarhola has revealed that the cave formed around a dipping anticline and that the cave has a complex history, probably originating from a set of dip tubes developed in a sheared bedding/foliation plane. The big rooms are most probably formed by a large river in the past, either as an ice-marginal overflow or maybe as a pre-glacial fluvial system. Our data logger measurements confirm very strong thermal winds through the cave and an expected dynamic behaviour in relation to external temperatures. We have also cored the upper 5 m of ice for environmental tracer analysis, which are in progress as well as a detailed study of a MIS 7 speleothem from the cave. 14th International Congress of Speleology. 23rd Paleopathology Association European Meeting
Vilnius University Proceedings, 2022
We are excited to have you here, at the 23 rd European Meeting of the Paleopathology Association. After a postponement of two years due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this will finally take place in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania. Although the conference will be in the form of a hybrid event, in order to allow the possibility of both physical and online participation, we are particularly grateful for the warm response of many of you from different countries and even continents, to gather here and update each other on research, promote cooperation, discuss new promising techniques, and finally revive and establish new contacts. While the central theme of the conference will be "Paleopathology and its impact on medicine and society", focusing on the importance of both scientific achievements and public outreach, we were overwhelmed by fascinating topics expressed by a total of 147 contributions! These cover bone and soft tissue conditions, parasites and pathogens, as well as diet, disability, care, and ethics. As the world faces new different challenges that include climate change and even war-related issues, Paleopathology must necessarily confront with the present and contribute to create a more responsible planet, making sure the dead continue to be silent teachers for the living. Thank you for making this come true! On behalf of the organizing committee,
