Food to fuel and the world food crisis

With the millennium as a springboard, the United Nations embarked on an ambitious plan in the 1990s to halve the number of the world's population suffering from hunger by the year 2015. But despite UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon's upbeat progress report on the Millennium Goals last summer, a new problem is emerging around food prices and food shortages. This problem has prompted swift action by the UN to try to avert looming food price crises throughout the developing world which could quickly undo much of the progress outlined in the report. In the developing world there is a very serious risk that fewer people will be able to get food. How may anthropologists contribute to this emerging problem?
A new global research agenda for food

Everywhere, the consumption of vegetables, legumes, fish, nuts, seeds and fruits is much below that recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Meanwhile, people are consuming too much fat, processed meat, salt and sugary drinks. Global food systems are failing to keep us all fed, let alone healthy. How food is grown, distributed, processed, marketed and sold determines which foods are available, affordable and desirable. These factors have a crucial role in the quality of people's diets, and hence play a vital part in health. Diet is the number one risk factor in the global burden of disease 2. Contemporary food production, given the degree of technology being applied in it and the present state of scientific knowledge, should be able to feed the world. Corresponding statistics show that in fact the volumes of modern food production confirm this statement. Yet, the present nutritional situation across the globe leaves much to be desired: on the one hand the numbers of undernourished and malnourished people are still high and even growing in some regions, and on the other hand there is an increasing number of overweight and obese people who are experiencing (or are at risk of) adverse health impacts as consequences. The question arises how this situation is possible given the present state of food production and knowledge, and also in terms of nutrition basics when talking about the latter. When arguing about the main causes of the present situation with nutrition across the globe, it is the modern food system with its distortions that is often criticised with emphasis placed on inappropriate food distribution as one of the key problems. However it is not only food distribution that shapes inequalities in terms of food availability and accessibility -there is a number of other factors contributing to this situation including political influences. Each of the drivers of the present situation might affect more than one part and have outcomes in different dimensions. Therefore it makes sense to apply a holistic approach when viewing the modern food system, embracing all the elements and existing relationships between them for this will facilitate taking appropriate actions in order to target the desired outcome in the best possible way. Applying a systematic approach and linking various elements with corresponding interactions among them allows for picturing all the possible outcomes and hence finding the way for a better solution on global level - a solution to the present problem with nutritional disbalance across the globe.
Food and Sustainable Development: How should we feed the world?
This chapter explores a number of issues connecting food and sustainable development. It highlights some of the ways the dominant twentieth century paradigm, productivism, exerts particular pressure upon resources and squeezes the entitlements of the poor. An alternative approach informed by sustainability not only works with nature but supports the claims of farmers and citizens to recover their rights to feed themselves. Nevertheless, meat remains a difficult issue to resolve given its enormous environmental impact yet with universal expectations around consumption.
Keynote Address "Global food strategies for healthy and sustainable food choices"
The keynote address describes and contextualizes the food and nutrition situation worldwide, and by doing so, raises awareness that nutrition is a critical dimension of food security, health and development. It provides an overview of how global food policies can support healthy and sustainable food choices for improving diets and raising levels of nutrition. The address contributes to the Conference and Congress by sharing ideas and knowledge that can contribute to the identification of key issues to be tackled when targeting the most nutritionally vulnerable. By drawing upon recently published works on nutrition, the presentation reviews the major global and regional trends in food supplies, diets and nutrition; identifies the major opportunities and challenges for improving food and nutrition around the world; refers to the various global efforts culminating in the ICN2 to address these challenges; and looks at the opportunities that the raising of nutrition higher up the international development agenda has created for nutrition practitioners and development economists to improve nutrition for all. It also identifies a number of possible practical actions that may be taken by governments, UN agencies, research institutions, the private sector as well as NGO/CSOs for improving food and nutrition security. A background and summary is provided of the Second International Nutrition Conference (ICN2) including its main outcome, the Rome Declaration on Nutrition, a political response to address the current nutrition issues and challenges, and its Framework for Action for Nutrition which provides a set of voluntary policy options and strategies to implement the Declaration. Opportunities for nutrition practitioners are identified, with a call for more research on a number of topics including strengthening the information base for better information on what constitutes a healthy diet, along with some ideas for future research including on the human biome or gut microbiota. It concludes with a call for action for improving global diets and raising levels of nutrition.
